Sort of. Here in Australia, there are instances of mandates saying "we're not going to *force* you into this camp, but you're not allowed to leave your house, even for food -- but we've got this van to take you to this nice camp if you like". They'll do it if you just *know someone* with covid.

@goaded Apparently not. Cops won't let it happen. It's creepy shit. Even if they weren't stopping that, it's shit entirely unacceptable to restrict people like that. But it's not like it's that new, Australia is a nation descendant from convict-slaves and their jailors. We've always had a problem with authoritarian policing, and no bill of rights to protect us from infringement from the government.

When it comes to "knowing someone" they're probably not going to care about your cousins. It's more like your mother on the other side of town gets sick and even though you test negative, they might decide you're to close to let it slide and tell you to get in the van. The point is that it's arbitrary, if *they* decide that you're likely enough to have come in contact then it's the van for you. No, due process, just get in the van. And whether you're willing to go with them or not, it's not optional to leave. People have tried escaping from the camp and the cops track them down. It's not "we recommend you quarantine" or "please quarantine", it's "get in the van, go to the camp, and you're not allowed to leave unless we let you". There's double layered electrified fencing ffs. Very creepy.

Firstly, I don't see what part of that sounds reasonable. The government shouldn't have that power.

Secondly, my point about the problem of authoritarian cops is that they won't necessarily follow those rules -- they government sets the agenda and we have this problem of cops willing to overstep to get the desired results.

As far as I know we still haven't passed a bill of rights and we rely on the United Nations treaty to define our rights. But that has a number of holes which essentially means if a government decides what it does to it's people is justified, then they're not violating any rights. It's an international agreement with an international body. Unless you're committing a major genocide then wtf is going to happen? Nothing. Who is going to step in? No one. The Queen? Doubt it, even if she did have the authority (it's not clear whether she does even though we're a monarchy). Da fuq is the UN gonna do if the Australian government likes to push the boot into people's necks here and there and *grants itself* the right to do so? Nothing.

Cancers and heart diseases and the like are now less likely to be caught early effectively condemning a large number of people to death. Waiting lists through the roof, again, creating untold suffering as people have to live and probably die with certain conditions.
We know excess deaths are up despite the success of your jab campaign and a small proportion of these excess deaths being attributable to covid.
People have been psychologically destroyed and have lost hope, likely killing a large number of people who were on the precipice. Because I know, to you, only covid kills people. But in reality will to live is so important in one's personal mortality.
Isolating and psychologically destroying people in general.
This is only the tip of an iceberg.

How many deaths? (You know we're talking about Australia, right? Where there have been a total of 2,252 deaths.)

I guess you want to talk about New York, but Florida overtook them in absolute numbers of dead months ago, and are just 100 deaths per million behind, when back in June 2020, they were at 2,700 deaths to NY's 31,000 (114 to 1,538 deaths per million).

Tell me how 30,000 deaths (1,547 per million) after the initial panic is worse than 61,000 (2,795).

There have been nearly 150,000 deaths in the UK (2,172 per million), and 113,000 in Germany (with 30% larger population, so 1,339).

I agree that the UK government could have done much better, but only by doing more, not less.

I see what you are getting at, but you really have to look at the facts. For example, there were actually 10% fewer suicides in 2020 than the average of 2016-2019, and that number was 5,224, which is a fraction of the pandemic numbers of up to a thousand or more a day at times.
