While the world could stop Russia easily, that comes at a price. In this case nuclear war between NATO and Russia. If you compare nuclear war between Russia and NATO then even erasing Ukraine from the map would be a lesser cost since a Nuclear war would threaten all human life on earth.

When you are trying to do something about Russia that will always be a question. As such a direct conflict between NATO and Russia is very unlikely unless both sides makes major mistakes and accidentally starts it.

It also limits how harsh you can be on Russia. We could technically speaking probably break Russia completely through sanctions alone. Problem with that is that they still have a massive stockpile of nukes and if Putin loses control over them because his government crumbles, who gets to have their hand on the button? Its not even certain that only one person would have access to nukes if Russia crumbles, their stockpile could be split between countless different groups and individuals who would have the ability to launch them if they so choose.

As such, breaking Russia like we did the Soviet Union (or worse) is VERY risky. Even if no one launches it in the chaos that follows, what is to say that someone who has access to them dont for example sell one to a terrorist organization?

For all these reasons and many more the preferred solution is to apply enough pressure that Putin is forced to step down or be replaced but that the government itself is as stable as possible so they can put in another leader who is trustworthy enough not to press the button for no reason. Any person they would replace him with would be the usual type of corrupt selfish dictator but that would mean that they would get out of Ukraine because it loses them money and that they would just continue to siphon off tax money for themselves and their friends.

Improving the country and making it more democratic can be done later and without the risk of nuclear annihilation. Right now we are just trying to walk the fine line between forcing Russia to stop the war while still making sure they survive the damage.

The world has sat by and watched a lot of genocides. But I would say this, I don't see how this conflict stays contained. We are just one mistake away from WWIII.
