Yes, and it made a positive change, too. I wrote to the sanitation department manager of my city and got the city to install a public trash receptacle outside of my apartment (which was close to downtown and had a lot of foot traffic) because people kept leaving trash outside my apartment's front door. It was a big solar powered one. And it was worth it too, cause the thing would get full pretty quickly, then start to overflow. I'm kinda surprised it worked, then again, it was 2016, which was an election year, so maybe that's why it worked.
Writing letters such as: "Please vote (for or against) this legislation" are a waste of time.
The congressperson's (MP) actual purpose is to solve problems you are having with federal departments: maybe your military pension or Social Security benefits aren't being paid, or great grandpa can't get into a veteran's hospital, despite his wartime service.
I had an issue with the US Department of State which no amount of effort on my part would or could solve. I wrote a letter to my congressman outlining my problem, and as if by magic, my issue was resolved in two weeks, and to my complete satisfaction.
I still remember the letter from the State Department hack telling me that..."It was not necessary for you to have contacted your congressman over this simple misunderstanding."
I've written to my local politicians to speak out about things I dislike or disagree with, and to point out solutions or alternatives.
I don't expect them to actually read or act on it.
I've gotten the usual canned responses from their communications offices - normal for how my local gov't acts.
This said, I think it's important to speak up when you're dissatisfied as a citizen, and to do so not just through protest but through official channels as well.
I got a reply back too... but I didn't get summon to the US about my letter like some girl did with obama. No, I got a reply back that didn't say shi about what I talked about. And a picture of him. :)
Yes, when I was naive. At some point you realize that they don't even read them. A staff member merely selects a prewritten response letter that matches the topic and mails it to you to make you think you are a constituent whose opinion matters. All the while, the politician is meeting and making deals with lobbyists and wealthy people who are the only ones who really matter.
"Dear Mr. _____ , Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla Please know that I will keep your opinion in mind."

Yes, after the Jan 6 coup attempt I wrote Jim Jordan and asked him to step down under article 3 section 2 of the fourteenth amendment. Obviously he didn't obey the constitution and continues to give support to those who wish to end democracy in the USA.

I have, but it's generally a waste of time unless thousands of constituents are mailing them about the same issue and even then it doesn't guarantee action.
Last time I wrote in was in favor of universal basic income, and before that to tell city council that a 20kph speed limit for bikes on bike paths is stupid.
I have, and got results but I had to persist. I found that writing to a state representative and getting boilerplate replies is less effective than finding out where they work and showing up to get in their faces.

I was trying to get a job with a government agency and I contacted my senator to see if he would write a letter for me in my behalf. His office was very helpful and I may have got the job if I really pursued it.
No, but I did get a handwritten letter from a politician I voted against. I replied with saying I could never support anyone who gave the terrorists at The Capitol on January 6 a free pass.

Yeah and it’s not “pointless” per se, it feels pointless. But politicians make decisions based on voters and donors. We don’t have the money, so we need to make policians feel the voter pressure. Which made the tea party so effective for example.
