Most of the Russian military is kept in a constant state of PTSD. With things leaking out that in some cases conscripted soldiers are forced into pretty much BDSM bondage. Level of humiliations to essentially keep the military neutered. As if that wasn't bad enough they got a toxic social hierarchy where the Russian Mafia allegedly frequently assaults the Russian mid to low level military and black mails them to pay back debts. So its a constant state of fear from the military.

Which sort of makes sense if you do any digging into the KGB you would know a lot of their tactics are mostly based upon the idea of DESTROYING moral and then rebuilding it to be stronger. Which only works so long as the will to live also survives. And if thats the backbone of the special forces you gotta think what that type of ideology does to the general soldier who isn't fit to be in special forces.

Not to mention if you read into any old like WWII documents its also noted if you study the dates compared to when Generals and high ranking officers you will notice that only the witty leaders survive what you could call pruning. There is a reason a lot of the best leaders are dead from Russia's history. Which would also further explain why and how the attack on Ukraine is so massively is unorganized and how a country that spends maybe only a few million in military is holding off one of the worlds like super powers.

It could be argued even North Korea could take over Ukraine faster than Russia simply cause their military actually does exercises.

Doubt and it would not be smart to do regime change, not without absolutely securing the region and Russia is a lot of land to take over so not smart for Western powers if they actually care about the people not dying and descending into post-gaddafi levels of insurgency

The issue isn't Putin. The issue is that Russian society has to convert to democracy. Otherwise, this is simply rinse and repeat.

Strangely, we have an element of American society who think totalitarian societies are a viable alternative.

I guarantee you it wouldn't. Until the Russian people are given the power to elect their leaders, the politics will stay roughly the same. The issue there is similar to China. Having a communist background, the apparatus is one of a ruling class, where the leader is selected. The leader of course, has to keep the ruling class rich and prosperous. And they together try to keep the standard of living in Russia at an acceptable level.

Mind you, an acceptable level for most Russians is 400-500US a month.
