Conservatives as a whole have not changed their policies. Look at every big policy and go back 30 years. If anything they’ve become far more liberal. The Left in America increasingly seem willing to throw away everyone’s freedoms as soon as a threat arises.

No. About 50% of the population are conservatives, they are normal people with their own lives. Mostly they just want the same things as everyone else; law and order, a good economy with jobs, good education for themselves and their families, etc etc. It's just their view on what policies will achieve this is different to those who are not conservatives.
