I don't have kids yet, but from a google search, Kindergarten here in NRW // germany would cost me about 0€~100€ per month (0~1200€ per year).
Additionaly there is the cost for meals, if the kids stay longer and eat in the kindergarten.

School on its own is free, but the parents have to pay for materials (pen, pencil, some books, fieldtrips, ... ) which is about 50€-200€ per year.

Its really confusing as there are thousands of different rules and it varries from state to state, city to city, and sometimes even within the city.

I worked in a K-12 school district and the expenditure per pupil was $18,000. The district hired an attendance officer. I thought it was some guy that would catch kids playing hooky. Instead it was a guy that found students that were attending class that did not live in the district. This guy easily paid for his salary just by catching 4 or 5 kids.
