WAY. TOO. MUCH. In the U. S. at least. You are very right. After we had our first child (back in 2002) we ran the numbers. It was going to cost so much that it wasn't worth my wife working so she stayed home by choice because of child care costs.

That’s my situation 💯. I want to work but even after schools programs it’s ridiculous. And 14 year olds around here thing it’s cute and far to charge 22 an hour for there services and don’t even have credentials yet. Raising there cousins makes them over qualities.

I thought to myself when my kid goes to school I can get a job. Nope. Who’s more qualified than me anyway.

Here's the kicker: even if you did work and somehow manage to afford child care, all your salary goes to the child care. BUT... you still have a much higher combined income so you get screwed on taxes. That was what pushed us to stay one income for a while.

Wow! That’s ridiculous. I’m glad I asked this question. There is a lot to consider here. Because I’ve been holding off on having another for a while and been debating because I knew I’d have to sacrifice my career for another child. And I just don’t know anymore. I used to want 5 kids. But if you can afford 5 kids and be comfortable today that means your rich or should be. Definitely both parents are bringing home 6 figures

Most people can’t afford to have or be a stay and home mom like in the 50s. Cost of living is too high. Then there’s a lot of single parents that didn’t see the divorce coming. So they have no choice but to work and put there children in daycare. Some places it can be 2,000 a month and most new parents are just not prepared for that or expecting that.

Also let’s not forget roe v wade was overturned. So if you have an unplanned pregnancy, good fucking luck.
