Do you believe your government should have the right to restrict information?

This is regardless of where you live or where you're from but I am asking due to the board of disinformation that existed in the United States. I know multiple governments globally restrict or censor certain thoughts or information under the guise of "helping" or "protecting" it's people. What's your opinion on it? Should some things be censored? What things and why?

In the case of the USA, in which the government is supposed to be in service to the people and not the other way around, and the freedoms of speech, press and expression are guaranteed by the constitution, the government should be afforded a platform in the public square to give give its point of view and participate in open debate, which is loosely the role of the Press Secretary as well as anyone else who gets in front of a camera; it should not directly or indirectly have the power to silence opposing views.

Aside from the obvious legal issues from a government-run Department of Disinformation (which would in essence be a government-sponsored "fact checker" organization with legal authority), the people who keep getting pushed forward to lead it and others like it are obviously political shills who can't even pretend to be neutral or objective.

I used to be super free speech. Like fanatically so. Everyone should be able to soapbox without being silenced and all that jazz.

But then I became more aware of those that wanted to restrict free speech. Those who abused their right in order to separate people and use retoric that dehumanizes them; encouraging acts of violence against them.

My new moral is to intolerate the intolerable. Encourage environments that promote free speech, but that also means we have to both educate ourselfs against malicious propaganda and discourage speech that seeks to invalidate or remove rights from people.

My answer comes from living in the USA and except in the rare exception of military secrets such as the F-117 stealth fighter from years ago and such things the country is a democratic republic and "We the people" have a right to know as much as possible of our country and government. The things that would affect national security should at least be known to our elected officials so we can make informed decisions about the direction of the country.
