What's your favorite African kingdom from any period in history?

Carthage, from what's known of it beyond Roman propaganda, seemed like an interesting place, but since a LOT of these other answers probably say the same thing, I'll go with Ethiopia. A country that stopped ALL European, Asian, and other African conquest attempts COLD, all the way up until World War 2, when Italy invaded with air power and poison gas against troops with single-shot rifles? Who laughed at Egypt, at Rome, at Mecca and at Europe? Who supposedly have the Ark of the Covenant? Yeah, that sounds pretty cool to me.

ANY period in history? Then French North Africa. I know they committed a lot of atrocities, but they also really helped to modernize and Westernize the region. Thanks to the French, the Muslims in the Maghreb aren't as backwards as in other regions.

Carthage is probably a favorite but I favor the Romans above them; so I'll say Ethiopia, early Christians, contributed with warriors to the Crusades, stauncly opposed and defeated their neigboring Islamic rivals, fearsome longbowmen etc.
