What do you think about cloning to bring back extinct animals?

We already DID- seen a Pyrenean Ibex lately? Of course not. But you could've, in 2003- 3 years AFTER the last one died. Like most cloned creatures, its lungs were underdeveloped, and it died seven minutes later- but for those seven minutes, that ibex was no longer extinct.

Animals that went extinct millions of years ago, in times with wildly different climate or even GRAVITY differences, likely couldn't survive anyway- but dodos (wiped out by pigs) or great auks (the last of which was killed for practicing witchcraft- in the *1840's*!) would probably get by okay.

I think it definitely has it's risks, like it can destroy the ecosystem.

Recently extinct animals may be okay, but prehistoric ones can be a bad idea, as much as I'd love to see a real dinosaur or anything that didn't die due to humans.

It would be fascinating, but there's a reason certain species went extinct. If it was long before our time, it could be dangerous to inject them into this ecosystem.

But there are animals which are on the verge of extinction, which we are trying to save, and I do wonder if cloning those should be done. The issue is that cloning is gene therapy, and it swings the door wide open for all sorts of manipulation, especially in terms of human designing, and I am adamantly against that. So, overall, it's a no from me.

Honestly 100's of thousands of animals have gone extinct for various reason. Sure you can say humans probably killed off more species than any other species, but we are part of the animal kingdom as well. So natural selection is what it is. The less we play god, the better.

I would not mind it... if we made all mosquitoes disappear, completely gone from earth, and save some DNA in case we actually needed them to exist... we could bring some of them back to where is needed IF actually needed

Interesting idea. However there is a reason they are extinct and can’t survive so I always think about 2 issues when talking about extinct/rare animals:

it’s such a struggle to keep them alive as it’s unnatural , and the risk is what would they do to the environment they are in

It's cool to think about, but the reality is that the dead should stay dead. Animals that go extinct do so due to a failure to adapt, so bringing them back would more than likely either result in a species that requires inordinate amounts of interference in order to survive, or inflicts mayhem/unforseen crisis on the ecosystem they're introduced to.

It’s dangerous in a lot of cases because these animals could be either harmful to the environment or to humans like the ones that are going extinct make sense to clone to a certain degree but animals like saber tooth tigers and such could be wild and very untamed. They couldn’t glen released to the wild like most animals today partly because of them being unpredictable but also because their natural habitats are basically gone

My guess is the wooly mammoth will be the first large animal brought back. There was also one species that “re-evolved.” They placed it’s ancestor in its new environment and it evolved in the same way.

That could probably be done with some extinct birds in Hawaii.

I've seen enough Jurassic park to know that wouldn't end well

These animals became extinct due to natural selection, and bringing them back would purely be for novelty. they would be paraded in zoos, and studied by scientists, or kept as pets by the elites, but would have little to no chance of surviving again in the wild. And if they do, the effect they have on the environment could be catastrophic. It's better that they're left to the history books.

It won't. Which is why not a single one has been successfully done.  All cloning mass cloning will do, is bring the misery of being "living ornaments" to a few rich folk, even closer.

Wouldn’t work for the passenger pigeon. They required huge numbers to stimulate breeding. Once those numbers went below the tipping point they stopped breeding and extinction. We don’t know what that number is but it’s a huge amount plus they survived mainly on huge chestnuts and the tree has been virtually wiped out by chestnut blight after their extinction

If they become extinct due to natural changes, it's not possible to bring them back.. it can threaten the habitat of existing species if they reappear.
Because this is how nature programs itself and you can't make it go back to its old form. But I'm never against bringing back species that have become extinct due to humans, don't know how possible it is.. however I support it.

It won't work, we don't have a 1000 samples of each extinct species, so we can't get the animal back only a weak inbreeding shadow of what it was.

Unless they have sperm and egg, it isn’t going to happen. Even if they could duplicate, without those, they would be nothing like the originals and have dramatically shorter life spans. Mammoths and dinosaurs aren’t coming back.
