If you’re from down south, you probably don’t know much about Martha’s Vineyard, but it’s a summer vacation community, not much happens there between Labor Day and the following Memorial Day, it’s a ghost town on an island the rest of the year. And again, it’s not like someone called up Massachusetts and was like “yo, in a week or so we’re going to send some people, so get some services lined up” and Mass was just like “nah, fuck off, don’t send them.” This was totally done by surprise, because it was never about helping these people, it was just a petty little attempt at a “gotcha!” moment that backfired when the migrants were met with kindness. The fact that they don’t live on Martha’s Vineyard forever now isn’t anything. They’ll have a much better chance in Boston or one of our other small cities to find work. I worked at a supermarket in high school, and they’d have to recruit people from mainland stores to live out there for the summer and work the store on the island, and they’d put you up in a group apartment and pay higher wages. It’s not really a haven for employment, and it’s no accident that that’s where they chose to send them. The whole thing just reeks of political theater and bad-faith efforts to “help” these people via relocation.

1. I’m not a lawyer, and I don’t even play one on TV, so I can’t get too deep into this one with any measure of expertise. But the fact of the matter is that these people were lied to. They were told they were going to Boston, they got sent to an off-season vacation island as a stunt. I don’t live my life based on what does or doesn’t stand up in a court of law, if something stinks, I can tell in the smell. It doesn’t need to be illegal to be indecent and in bad faith, and THAT’S what I care most about, people acting in a decent and good-faith manner. 2. 20,000 beds doesn’t equal 20,000 jobs. I’m not sure “sanctuary city” infers taking anyone into private homes or hotels or anything. Could that be an option? That would be worth taking about, generally speaking, but again, there isn’t any work for these guys and gals on the island at this time, and they may not be suited for a lot of those jobs to begin with, it’s almost all tourism money there, and many don’t speak English. There are only so many restaurants with so many dishwasher positions. America just has to be their general frontier, wherever they can find work they can do until they’re better acclimated to life in America. Wherever that is is wherever that is. The point is just that we want to treat them like actual human beings, wherever they are.

3 & 4. I’m not sure Joe Biden is personally the guy who gives notice, but whatever for that, your point is well-taken, if true. There should a process to all of this, and I’m all for spreading people around to share the burden. But again, this is all about the attitude. If Texas or Florida are legitimately stressed, I’m not against relocation, as long as the people are treated like people, keep families together, and operate in, the key phrase in all of this discussion, GOOD FAITH.

1: The inherently dishonest thing about a lawyers is their job is to argue any position is legal or illegal under the law. So it is almost pointless to ask an objective opinion either way except in looking for a way to have your way.
