Why do people in Trinidad hate their Indian (South Asian) heritage?

I’m talking based on the people I know. My bf’s mom never wanted to learn the language from her Indian mother at least she could cook some things though but the sisters really dislike their heritage and they’re the most Indian looking people ever. I think that Indian people are so cool and I love the food, watch their movies, and everytime that I see them dancing in movies I get so excited.

Most people there are from the North of India. Currently there is a lot of anger, hate and intolerance towards Muslims in that part of the country and honestly it's unwarranted. They can also tend to be very rigid towards religion and traditions that are actually supposed to be fun and inclusive.

Well then I suppose they just don't get along. You don't find a lot of liberal people in those parts.

The British tended to import foreign ethnicities from elsewhere in the empire into some of their colonies to increase the diversity of the population. This was a way of suppressing the local native population. The immigrant groups tended to lose connection to their homeland and it’s culture. Also, there was often admixture with the native population. This dislocation of identity can result in resentment against the original culture from which a migrant group was derived.

Jay I don't know the answer to your question. But from the pics of your boyfriend that you've posted he certainly doesn't look like he has South Asian heritage. And yet his sisters do.

In the older gens there tends to be a lot of bad blood between Indians and what would be considered blacks which I imagine was at play
