Why do small town communities cover up crimes for one another?

Without the people directly around you what life is there to live? The local church, all the friends and family you've ever known talking shit to every last person you don't know in that town you only know and love.

It gets ugly pretty quickly. It's truly brave and bold to turn against a tight community because you will have nothing left no matter how righteous or good it is.

A crime can "tarnish" a town's image quite drastically which can hurt tourism which some towns rely on for income.
