Big private newscooperations are a tool, for the opinion, for those owning it. Because it is a cooperation trying to become bigger, its mostly capitalism.
Smaller newsgroups or local newsgroups is a tool of freespeech as everyone has the ability to voice their opinion. Also smaller people with more specified opinions have a chance to write there. It is not a way to be free of consequencs.(which was Never part of freespeech, but lots of people think so) When you voice an opinion you should expect oposing opinions. As someone working for local news I just wish the replies are more opinion based and less insult based.

With that beeing said: the main purpose which 90% of all publishings in this sector should be, and often are, is their purpose to inform people, To spread information.
Yes information is allways tainted but should never be a Lie. You can easily see, that you life in a free country, when you can find information from all sites and not just one site. When you have problems finding information from oposing sites or only indirect information you know something is wrong! Bassically orwel:. 'If you want to know who rules over you, look at who you are not allowed to criticize.'
Many people today sadly dont know the difference between criticizing and insulting!

The US media is a tool of capitalism and it always has been. Well, at least since William Randolph Hearst with certainty.
