Because she is. She's openly said as much. It's not like it's a secret, or something shameful she'd want to keep hidden.
How do you explain the God stuff then?
Simple: she grew up a Vaishnavist, and they're all about Krishna, who's kind of like what you'd get if Jesus and Errol Flynn had a baby (who then went back in time, given the respective ages). Her later youth and early adulthood was a bit more of a spiritual mishmash; people in such situations often come to think of a universal god as expressing itself in different ways to different people in different times and places.
