So tonight I was roused from my slumber by the sounds of thugs banging on my window and shouting.
Concerned for the safety of my kids and wife I stepped outside to confront whoever was causing the disturbance.
They tell me their beef isn't with me and to send out my neighbor, to which I responded that it became with me when they started scaring my kids in the middle of the night and that they better beat it before I call the cops.
They slunk away, but not before saying "you'll pay for this" like some shitty 80s bad guys.
Pretty sure that my neighbor is a dealer and those guys were some kind of organized criminals.
And here I am, sitting awake annoyed as fuck that I can't even legally have a shotgun with which to defend my home and family from these people should they return. I'm stuck with naught but my pocket knife, fire poker a stick or an old hunting bow.
Meanwhile they probably have modern pistols at the minimum.
What the hell is the matter with this country (Canada) that I have to send my wife and kids away for a few days because the state has refused me right to protect them effectively?
Don't give up your rights if you still have them, because somehow the lowlifes still manage to get guns regardless.
Hopefully those guys were just talking shit, because I don't want to have to go to a gun fight with a damn bow and arrow.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm installing a security camera and a motion activated light out back as well as posting a sign pointing out the camera. Hopefully that will deter weirdos from messing around here in the night.
Yes it does, as I live rural... even calling the police, can be 90 minutes or so to get a response.
The law also doesn't like it, if they take that long to respond to say a rapist, and I decide to get revenge and kill them later so I can move on with my life.
Liberals would have you say, just accept the fact that someone broke into your home and raped you, then accept the short sentence they got for it... assuming the police even caught him. After all, he did threaten you when he was done to not call the police, that he'd come back and rape you again and kill you if you do and since he just succeeded at it, why would anyone doubt that?
Then they'll blab on about how therapy is the fix all for everything.
You shouldn't have to send anyone away for personal safety and if the government won't let you own a gun, they should place police for the next year outside your place as a legal requirement and not at your expense.
That's what I say about the US, they want to get rid of guns, FINE... but they need to get a officer to protect everyone that is less than 30 seconds away from anyone calling. That is about how long it takes me to get in my gun safe to get a gun... I ain't waiting no 2 minutes, or 5 minutes or an hour.

Children would be perfectly safe under basic Canadian gun safety minimum standards which is a trigger lock and ammo in a separate locked box elsewhere in the home.

The main issue I think is a soft justice system and a lack of deterrents.
Suppose by some miracle these guys were caught and prosecuted for uttering threats and disturbing the peace. They'd probably be out in a few short months.

The idea that guns kill more children than any other accidents is smoke and mirrors. As if all those gun deaths are accidents.
The gun control lobbyists know that a demographic with the highest rates of gun violence is between 16 and 18 years old. So they conveniently lump everyone under 18 together and refer to them as children. And then people imagine all those innocent "children" dying in tragic accidents because they find their irresponsible parent's gun. Everytown (an astroturf anti-gun lobby) says that "3,540 children AND teens (people under 20?) die from guns". 1,171 children under 15 and 7,987 people under 25 die in highway accidents. So I would imagine that the number of "teens" and people under 20 who die in highway accidents to be pretty close to the number who die from guns. 6,779 people under age 25 die from accidental falls.
There are 72 million children under age 18. Under 3,500 total gun deaths including suicides? Is that a 0.00486% chance of getting shot to death?
The FBI says that 80% of firearm homicides are gang related. A lot of 16 to 18 year olds are involved with gangs or live in drug infested neighborhoods.

A similar yet different gun law that has caused issues In the US: Gun Free Zones (1990). On the face of it, it sounds totally reasonable and kinda makes sense (at the time it was created anyway). Fast forward 30+ years, most (~90%) mass shootings occur in gun free zones……. Why…. Little to no resistance from concealed carry / armed individuals and unfortunately, there aren’t enough law enforcement or securities personal to ensure everyone is safe / deter criminals.
No- violence endangers civilians. Gun control just robs them of a tool to fight back. That's only a tool, however; if gunpowder's unavailable, you can arm yourself other ways. Pneumatic acceleration might not get QUITE the same speed, but still enough to kill somebody. Magnetic acceleration is trickier, but potentially even faster.
Most easily createable "made-from-household-chemicals"-type explosives aren't especially strong, but if you can be satisfied in driving people away, one going off only a few feet from you makes a VERY strong fear response. And if you're just looking to incapacitate, there are several commercially available hot peppers over 2 million Scoville units; police-grade pepper spray is only about two and a half.
I have a bow and the skill to use it which is probably better than something improvised and a crime in itself lol.

Look at USA, its east to get guns there, but it has not solved many problems. Kids steal guns and leads to mass shooting ar schools. Or siblings accidently shooting their siblings. Or making it easy to kill your enemy.
I don't mean that its wrong to have guns. I just think the right people who are in danger should have them, but put them in a safe place and be very careful about them.
The solution to who should own a Gun is not easy. People can still smuggle guns in the country anyway. And some get right to guns in other countries, which makes then have also rights to gun in another country.
People in other countries that don't have rights fot civils to have a gun, there are less death rates that in th US.
They're in the middle of an anti gun power grab right now. Everything semi automatic, even pump shotguns have been banned as "assault" weapons. Even a lot of single shot guns have been banned along with all handguns.
Theoretically I should be able to take a safety course at the range, file for a licence and background check and at least have a shotgun or a hunting rifle, but with everything getting banned nobody really knows what's going to still be allowed at the end of the day. The worst part is that they only one this causes problems for are legitimate law abiding citizens.

You Americans make it all look like a big thing, in UK, not even police are armed fully, they have separate branches of armed/unarmed police but British people don't get this insecure about their safety.
But you live on a relatively small island. Things are very different here. All the gangs are armed, regardless of the local gun control laws. We have very serious drug and tweaker problems and the wildlife is a serious threat.
In the last 10 years a coffee barista down the street from me was abducted and killed by a serial killer and we regularly have wildlife attacks. There was a guy in my town eaten by a brown bear who was just walking down the street to get his Mail.

Of course it does. Unless a patrol car just happens to be cruising by and the officers see the assailant (s) kicking in your door, you're alone till the police can get there if you can get a 911 call off. Especially if the intended victim is smaller and/or elderly and/or untrained in real life fighting, a firearm can be the great equalizer.

What are you even talking about? I said the neighbor in another unit might be selling drugs. Which is probably what caused those people to show up in the middle of the night.

I don't think wanting to have a shotgun or a revolver for home defense is too unreasonable an ask. Crime is up and I'm concerned for my kids safety.
I'm hoping that the motion activated light and camera I'm putting in will be a sufficient deterrent but it's a poor substitute in a bad situation.
I live outside of city limits and have to hear shotguns constantly. My backyard neighbor shoots into the air for fun at random times of the day and its scary. In highschool, my friend and i passed through this ditch between her yard and her neighbors. He shot is 3 little teen girls claiming we stepped foot on his property when it was a ditch between both propertys. Guns make me extremely uncomfortable as do most gun owners. But i get that you have you reasons for wanting them
Well I don't mind a little target practice at reasonable hours under safe conditions but blasting at kids just for stepping on the grass is obviously insane.
