Many things. I started writing an article about this, but got bored of it and decided to put it aside.

Anyway, I think one that seems obvious, but might be helpful to others is...

People who are shy and nervous, etc., worry about how they will come off (be perceived by others), and that keeps them reserved, and in extreme cases, very anxious about social situation, and even in work contexts, expressing their opinions for fear of any repercussions. And what I learned over the years is that, essentially, most people are more concerned with how they come off, and that is preoccupying the majority of the real estate up in their brains. In a conversation, or exchange, yes, the other is judging and thinking about what you are saying. But they also have to think about what they are saying, and how you will feel about that. I think a lot of people miss this fact, and if they fully incorporated this into their thinking, they could legitimately feel less anxious about communication and relationships.

However... it's often only when the two people get to know each other well - like lovers, family, etc.- that they have enough reserve brain power to anticipate what you are going to say, and have responses to that. But then we add in the entire prior history, and the 'baggage' that accumulates between them; or, as I said, the rug beneath them gets rather lumpy, from trying to sweep all that junk under...
