Has working in corporate America changed your personality? In what way?

I have a friend that recently landed a job in Silicone Valley California. We have been friends since childhood.
I happened to find some old letters and Christmas cards from her. She was always so nice and sweet and signed her correspondence to me Love, Janet ❤️
This year when she sent me a texted birthday card she appeared so cold to me. No Love, Janet. I almost wish she had not even sent me a birthday wish.
My thought is that she's had that new corporate job for about six months now, and they have changed her into one of them.
That's the reason for this question. Thank you for your opinions.

Only for the better. I saw a number of goofy things going on that alerted me to the fact that SOMETHING strange was going on!! I was just about to quit when they decided to fire me which, I partly think was BECAUSE I was seeing this shit going on! A week or two later, the very people that fired me were put in jail FOR the shit I saw going on!!

I was into surfing, muscle cars, playing in rock bands, and partying.

When I was 26, I was handed a job as a motor vehicle damage adjuster/appraiser trainee with an up and coming auto insurance company in southern California.

I had to cut my long hair and wear a suit for the interview. In fact, we were required to wear suits for several years before they went with polo shirts.

Anyway, my lifestyle totally changed. I didn't recognize myself in the mirror. I felt like an imposter in a 12th story corporate office in Century City, and with the kind of people I used to hang out with.

It took me about five years to get used to my new persona and lifestyle. Basically, I grew up. But I might not have grown up if not for that job.

The office was pretty laid back and most people were cool. But I do recall a few people who became more aloof as they moved up the ladder.

I've also known people who acted one way at work and another way in casual environments. Cops do that, too. I don't trust people who have more than one personality.

I can't think of anyone I knew personally who was changed by corporate culture. It's more like they got real busy and we gradually had less and less in common and drifted apart.

I moved around a lot, did a lot of consulting work in various companies, and generally did a lot of job-hopping. So I've worked in a large number of companies. I don't think large corporations change people. I think stressful jobs can change people though, whether it's a very large corporation or a tiny three person company.

Silicon Valley is a shit-hole. But I'm partly biased because I hate big crowded cities. I moved there in the mid-80s and got the hell out after a month. The main reason I hated it there was because it was in a big-ass city and everyone was in such a damn hurry all the time.

To some degree the same thing applies to all the cities in California. Money rules there. You can say that about everywhere, but California takes it to a new level. People can't just kick back and relax. It's always go go go.

Silicon Valley has a lot of super ambitious people who chase the money. Personally I find it stressful just being around those kind of people. This isn't about corporations, it's about people - people who thrive on high stress jobs and think they are movers and shakers.

I've worked for some very large companies that were nice to work at. It's about how individual companies are run, where they are located, the general mindset of the people, local culture and lifestyle, etc.

When I started working, I use to be very left leaning... Then i started waking up to all of the bullshit in America, and specifically the feelings before facts mentality that liberals seem to have adopted. I'm still mostly middle of the road, but I have more in common with conservatives than I do leftists..

Leftism as it is, is a violation of my core belief structure, specifically one of the rules I follow.

A contradiction can not exist in reality. Not in part, nor in whole.

To believe in a contradiction is to abdicate your belief in the existence of the world around you and the nature of the things in it, to instead embrace any random impulse that strikes your fancy - to imagine something is real simply because you wish it were. A thing is what it is, it is itself. There can be no contradictions.

Faith is a device of self-delusion, a sleight of hand done with words and emotions founded on any irrational notion that can be dreamed up. Faith is the attempt to coerce truth to surrender to whim. In simple terms, it is trying to breathe life into a lie by trying to outshine reality with the beauty of wishes. Faith is the refuge of fools, the ignorant, and the deluded, not of thinking, rational men.

In reality, contradictions cannot exist. To believe in them you must abandon the most important thing you possess: your rational mind. The wager for such a bargain is your life. In such an exchange, you always lose what you have at stake.

The only sovereign you can allow to rule you is reason.

It hasn’t changed my personality. The fact that I saw so many capable people with integrity abused and so many worthless schmoozers who play in the moral gray area advance has just made me much more pessimistic about the future of America and implacably opposed to its parasitic, worthless managerial elites. Clear them out!

I have worked with a lot of people over the years that have been promoted to a higher position or special position or committee. After receiving the advancement. They seem to forget what they were like prior to their getting their new jobs.
Also some companies do not want their managers to fraternize with the working class!

I quit the corporate world and went into business for myself a yr. Ago. Best move of my life! I didn't dislike my previous job. But I'm the type of person the derives satisfaction from producing a product I'd be proud to put my name on. And after 23 years. I just didn't feel the company had that same dedication anymore.

I don't feel it changed my personality. I just couldn't live 8 hrs. Of my life every day 5 days a week like that anymore.
