I’m no genius, but I’m a reasonably intelligent woman. I’m finding that I frequently get bored since I had to leave a job I wasn’t any good at and I’ve been single and celibate for five years. When I get bored I start to feel upset and anxious. I’ve been invited to a local political discussion for folks in my district where I live. I feel like this could be a good chance to make friends or meet someone interesting or at the very least, have an interesting discussion. Should I try it out?

If you have nothing to lose, why not? That being said, religion and politics are 2 things I try to avoid when first meeting someone, only because those things can be incredibly polarizing. Humans are social creatures though, and if you truly isolate yourself for an extended time you may exacerbate any anxieties you have already developed. While the political meeting might be a good start, I'd also recommend taking up a group hobby that forces you to engage with other interested peoples.
yeah try venues where there are lots of people at www.meetup.com
I have trouble relating to people my own age. Many of them seem to highly prize the acquirement of wealth and just being workaholics. I can’t relate to such values.
Obviously try it out.
It can't be worse than the situation you have now.
