Ron DeSantis, the current governor of Florida, is possibly looking to run on the Republican ticket in 2024. Some people think he's Trump 2.0, but hin and Trump have gotten into it a few times.

+1 yPay attention, MustangSue - you're one of GAG's resident fascist trolls, hmm? Let's see, DeSantis' greatest hits, or shits, a few at a time:
* Illegally shipped two plane loads of migrant workers from Texas to Martha's Vineyards, a stunt using them as political pawns, after lying to them that they'd receive " expedited work papers and “up to eight months of cash assistance for income-eligible refugees in Massachusetts".* His banning of books that offer any representation of LGBTQ+ in any way, or the discussion thereof, even at the middle or high school levels.
* Requiring already overworked, understaffed teachers to catalog their libraries so a committee of right wing appointees of his choice can decide if they're to be allowed. Keep in mind, these committee members RARELY, if at all, read these books. For this example and the one above, they use a list from the Council for National Policy, a secretive group of THE most right-wing Conservatives in the USA. Their own members are not even permitted to acknowledge membership in this group.
* He spearheaded eliminating AP College Courses at publicly funded schools, particularly courses which he and his cronies feel have "no educational value", such as Afro-American studies. His "logic"? It's too slanted against white people and indoctrinates students to "woke" (a word he doesn't understand) philosophies. By the way, "woke" in DeSantis-stan means "anything that I don't like, especially if it's telling the truth".
* The above ties in with his misinformation about what Critical Race Theory actually is, and where it is discussed. He fosters lies that it's being discussed in Elementary Schools and being promoted in the books he's banned.
These are just a few of many, but alone, they're enough. DeSantis is nothing more than a fascist in disguise using 1933 style Nazi-speak tactics promoting hate while appealing to weak-minded people. He has the full backing of the CNP and radical Christian right wing, only this time the crusade isn't openly against Jews, homosexuals and anything non-Aryan. Now, there's a different group to demonize - LGBTQ and ALL Democrats or non-Republicans. He's an ass hat, a liar and apparently the ONLY person who can't remember where he was on 9/11.

5.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. In terms of policies, they are negligibly different, so calling him "Trump 2.0" is not inaccurate. Unlike Trump though, DeSantis is untested in foreign policy, and foreign adversaries would be much more likely to do something crazy just to measure his reaction.
The biggest problem with Ron is that he can't self-fund a presidential campaign, and would have to rely on the party establishment and big donors to support him. This is in fact what he's doing, as people like Karl Rove, the Bushes, and other professional losers have been getting involved with his campaign. This is also likely why some of his publicity stunts have been falling flat: his new advisors are out of touch, and more motivated at beating Trump than actually doing anything of value. This also makes it very debatable on whether or not a DeSantis presidential administration would actually be more effective than a Trump one, or if his effectiveness as a governor would carry over since he'd have less actual control.
The "rivalry" is largely a product of Trump's ego, but also unfortunate timing. Trump believes he is entitled to another run, and DeSantis basically has to run in 2024 or he will likely never be in as good of a position again- he will be out of office for 2 years by the time 2028 comes around and won't be relevant anymore. If it weren't for that, much of this wouldn't even be happening.

I'm guessing that the commercials you've been seeing are not from DeSantis, correct?
A governor or president can't cut social security. The truth is that the right wants to left to stop stealing the social security money for their pet projects. So in retaliation, the left is telling lies that the Republicans want to cut social security. No, the truth is, the right wants to cut stealing the money.

What Girls & Guys Said

+1 yComing here, I was very surprised by just how purple Florida is- broadly speaking, it leans conservative, but not by an overwhelming margin, and not to the crazy extent you see in, say, Texas. DeSantis kind of matches that- he's definitely conservative, but hardly the Republican nightmare the media decries him as. He's more conservative than Trump (which is saying very little, as Trump is by FAR the most liberal Republican Presidential candidate of my lifetime so far), but he's riding the same populist train; the two are naturally going to conflict.
DeSantis didn't keep Florida from shutting down like Noem did, but he also wasn't overridden by his mayors, so the state was down only briefly and bounced back VERY fast; while few Floridians appreciate what a nightmare the rest of the nation has become, they DO see that they've gained a serious economic advantage over most of the rest of the country, and credit him for that.
There are policies of his I staunchly disagree with, and I'm seriously bothered by the whole Guantanamo thing, but he's basically in touch with reality, and I'm content with his leadership. Would I have more objections if I hadn't fled the madness of Illinois'? Probably- but for the time being, I'll take what I can get. That's why I'm not happy about his announced intention to run for the White House; your governor has a MUCH bigger effect on your day-to-day life than the President, and I don't know enough about Nunez to be complacent.

When did de Santis try to "violently overthrow the government"? And that is way too narrow a definition of a traitor:

Mixup? That's putting it politely. You're full of shit.
But please entertain us with more BS- how did he "act like a fascist dictator and undermine plenty of American institutions"? Apparently you've been living under a rock because you aren't complaining about the Biden Administration and Democratic members of Congress and the federal bureaucracy for doing just what you've accused de Santis of. You clearly like dictators when they are traitors, as long as their loyalty is to leftist totalitarianism.

@Avicenna I have so many conversations about Trump and so few about DeSantis that I forget that he exists sometimes. Can you really blame me?
As for the fascists things DeSantis has done? Well for starters he punished Disney for speaking out against his bathroom bill by breaking the government contract that Disney had. This is clearly just him trying to wield the power of his office to go after his personal enemies for personal reasons.
Then we have DeSantis banning books in his stupid culture war against transgender people or whatever. Something fascists can all unite over.
Then we have the whole scandal of DeSantis using state resources to basically abduct immigrants and relocate them to other states. This is quite the overreach in power and authority and very tyrannical if not outright illegal and immoral.
We can also talk about his many MAAAANY disastrous decisions during the covid19 which ensured that Florida was one of the worst hit states in USA and many deaths lay directly at the feet of DeSantis. - +1 y
@Avicenna
Furthermore, we can talk about what he did before taking office to get a better read on the person. Namely when he was directly involved in the torture going on in Guantanamo Bay which is both illegal under US law but also under international law and quite frankly is on brand for a Republican official.
And to thoroughly tick the traitor box, we can take the time where he legislated against protests and enacted voter suppression.
So yeah.. DeSantis. A person with a history of torturing people who once he came into office started using it for his personal benefit to both enrich himself and go after his enemies. The people he is supposed to represent is put in danger by his own actions and countless of deaths can be directly attributed to him not to mention how he undermines pretty much every aspect of the country ranging from voting to rewriting history taught in schools so that the next generation of Floridians will grow up worse than the previous generation.
If I wanted to corrupt and undermine USA from within I would have employed DeSantis to do my dirty work for me. - +1 y
Unlike you, I work for a living and don't have time to correct all of the numerous falsehoods you spouted in your rant. Disney did not have a "government contract" with Florida- it had very special treatment no other company had which could be legally revoked by the Florida legislature.
And this alleged "bathroom bill", can you cite it so people can fact check you? You already told a whopper of lie in falsely accusing DeSantis of attempting to overthrow the US government, so we can't believe anything you say (all of which is unsourced, of course). You are unreliable and ideological, a very unstable combination, as your rants show.
And your allegations of him allegedly torturing people- who did he supposedly torture?
What is your source for your claims about Florida during COVID? Did you support the actions of the Democratic governors who sent COVID patients to nursing homes (with predictable results). Did anything like that happen in Florida? And are you aware that Florida has an older population than other US states?
- +1 y
@Avicenna If you kept up to date with the news or otherwise educated yourself on the subject before you open your mouth to voice your worthless opinion then you would not have to spend so much time responding to me. It is easy enough just to formulate a response as I read your reply since I have a decent understanding of who did what and where.
As for "special treatment", there is around 51 000 special districts around USA, and while yes Disney was able to leverage the benefits of a special district more than most they are by no means unique in this situation. The somewhat unique position they still have is a result of them working really hard to make the most of it.
You can say they should not have that much authority, personally I dont care and while I dont feel like digging up whatever legal bullshit their lawyers drafted all that time ago (they are insane) it is enough that I can point towards the implicit agreement between Disney and Florida for this purpose.
It was generally understood that Disney would take this godforsaken swampland that no one wanted and was economically worthless and turn it into a highly profitable and commercially successful property for the benefit of Florida in exchange for a decent amount of control over local functions.
It is also very clear that DeSantis specifically went after this to break up this implicit agreement. Not only does this impact the trustworthiness of the Florida government in general but also destroys the business faith since nothing in Florida is evidently safe from private retribution of its governor. - +1 y
@Avicenna As for what bill DeSantis started this with? I call it the bathroom bill because it is funner but its generally called the "Dont say gay" bill or more accurately called the "Florida House Bill 1557"
Does not really matter what it says or how unconstitutional it is. Point is, Disney spoke out against it and DeSantis retaliated.
And yes, DeSantis want to take control over the process of choosing the US government by controlling things like who gets to vote or how votes are counted through gerrymandering. The specific legislation I have in mind would be senate bill 90 and the gerrymandering you will have to look up yourself.
As for who DeSantis supposedly tortured in Guantanamo Bay? Mansoor Adayfi but presumably all of them as it appears it was his job to personally tailor the torture for the prisoners to make it worse.
As for covid19? Take your pick really.
www.statista.com/.../
Just as an example. But the point is that DeSantis specifically resisted any attempts to have the government give assistance in stopping or slowing the spread of the disease. You point to Democratic Governors sending patients to nursing homes? There was not even an attempt to protect nursing homes in Florida. Also, dont blame Floridas poor performance on people there being old. - +1 y
As usual, Soteris is arrogant, patronizing, and yet has no idea what he's talking about.
Reedy Creek was no ordinary special district:
www.tampabay.com/.../
So, yes dumbass Soteris, Disney did receive special treatment. Did you know that the company originally wanted it's own court system as part of Reedy Creek? And that there were lots of orange groves there? That a special district is a privilege, not a right?
And, unsurprisingly, since you lie about everything else, you lied about the legislation that Disney arrogantly stated it would work to reverse- the legislation among other things, prohibited formal classroom lessons about homosexuality in K-3 classrooms! Something that shouldn't have been happening anyway. Disney's CEO didn't want to get involved but was terrorized into doing so by a relatively small, but rabid group of extremist Disney employees. Should this small group of extremists decide legislation buy itself? Hell no, and no reasonable person would think it should. The legislation is called "Parental Rights in Education" and here's an explanation of it:
www.wtsp.com/.../67-569c99fa-d1d2-426a-99af-1a9c66f8f88c - +1 y
Just because some dumbass who knows nothing about the US wants to think the legislation was unconstitutional, doesn't make it so, and it wasn't (and no court has overturned it). If you think otherwise, you can BS out your ass all you want, but you'll still be wrong. As for gerrymandering, that's done everywhere in the US and has been in for 200 years! And your heroes in the US CCP Party (AKA the Democrats), got slapped down for their extreme gerrymandering in New York and some other places last year.
DeSantis was a lawyer in the military and certainly didn't torture anyone or advise anyone to, but a dumb propagandist like you doesn't care about facts.
It's time for your bosses in Beijing to send you some new scripts, Soteris. You're too dumb and biased to communicate on your own.
One last thing- if you're looking for totalitarian US governors, you will find them in California, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Minnesota. All members of the US CCP crime organization otherwise known as the Democratic Party.
- +1 y
And Florida is buiness-friendly and booming, so obviously nobody shares your crazy viewpoint. To sum it up, you think a democratically-elected legislature isn't allowed to exercise its legal power to protect small children or to revoke special privileges that it once gave that company simply because you and some employees of a huge, powerful company want otherwise.
Shows how clueless you are.
Now about the rape culture and corrupt lawyers in Sweden...
- +1 y
@Avicenna There is only one type of special district. Again, Disney being able to leverage that benefit more than others does not mean that they are getting special privileges that other special districts dont.
Also, dont bother quoting my own words back to me. I know about Florida House Bill 1557 and what it does. It is a retarded piece of hateful legislation and in my humble opinion, unconstitutional but its not like that matters today in USA. Disney also won't budge because of activists "forced" them. They work on pure profit motives. They (correctly) judged that they could get a better financial benefit by opposing Florida House Bill 1557. Corporations do what corporations do. Dont blame this on activists for no good damn reason.
In regards to its unconstitutionality. According to previous rulings of the supreme court you can't use undefined terms such as "Classroom discussions" and "Critical decisions" which anyone can selectively interpret for their own benefit and you must include an incredibly good reason to limit freedom of speech. Florida House Bill 1557 fail on both of these accounts alone and as such is unconstitutional according to the precedent set by the supreme court.
supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/269/385/ <-- Must not be too vague - +1 y
@Avicenna Just because gerrymandering has been done for 200 years does not make it any less anti-democratic and a subversion of the legal process of the transition of power. I rightfully consider each and everyone who participate in gerrymandering to be an actual traitor to that country and I find it hard to argue against that simple statement.
Regarding DeSantis participating in the torture in Guantanamo? I find it pretty irrefutable at this stage since there are multiple sources and evidence supporting the fact that he was.
Florida is also going down the drain. I particularly enjoy how you talk about being "business friendly" when the governor directly attacks probably the biggest business in the state. Pretty sure the business confidence has been irreparably harmed since if even Disney can't avoid persecution then what chance does a normal business have?
I would LOOOOVE to talk about the "rape culture" and "corrupt lawyers" in Sweden. Mainly because its a propaganda lie told to idiots like you to make you think the world outside your knowledge is worse than it actually is and make USA look better by comparison. I would not even have to make an effort quite frankly, since the propaganda is so easily torn to pieces simply by opening your eyes. - +1 y
Let me keep you from making more of a fool of yourself- has this legislation been struck down as unconstitutional? No, it has not. You can tie yourself in knots all you like, but it doesn't violate the First Amendment. Of course, like a typical totalitarian, only speech you like deserves protection.
If you had any common sense, you'd know that there are all sorts of limitations on speech in schools.
Disney's position didn't represent fiduciary duty- quite to the contrary, as the billions it lost in its streaming business shows. But I suppose you know better than the former Disney CEO himself.
But it's hilarious to see a Swedish totalitarian leftist whine about the First Amendment, something that does not exist in your own country, where people who say things leftists don't like get prosecuted. I have never seen you denounce these criminal prosecutions for speech in Sweden that would be protected by the First Amendment, so you clearly support them.
You just can't help yourself with the false claims (apparently hoping people will be gullible enough to believe you if you say something false but say it confidently):
www.lorman.com/.../everything-you-need-to-know-about-special-districts-17409
Special districts are not all alike. And you've already been presented with evidence that Disney's was very much special treatment, so stop making false claims you can't back up. - +1 y
Whatever one thinks of gerrymandering, only a deranged person would claim anyone involved with it is a traitor just for being involved in it. You're no democrat anyway and certainly don't understand the US. The real problem with politics in the US is that there is no real political pluralism at the federal level and there is tons of corruption at that level as well- some of the best corruption oligarchs can buy.
Florida has a business-friendly political culture. Can you back up your claims? You can't. It didn't hurt DeSantis when he ran for re-election, and taking on Disney's extreme, anti-child and anti-parent positions hasn't hurt Florida economically, either. And this is the case no matter how much you talk out of your ass.
So you don't have any proof to back up your latest BS claims about deSantis in Guantanamo. More of the same from you. What you have never learned is that most people don't share your extreme views and don't accept BS claims.
And, surprise, surprise you don't want to talk about rape and corruption in your country. A normal person would actually care what goes on in his backyard, but you can't run away from the topics fast enough. But that doesn't come as a surprise- Swedish police covered up rapes and other violent crimes by fake asylum seekers and now refuse to acknowledge at all that these fake asylum seekers commit these crimes. Why don't Swedish men protect Swedish women? Why do you try to cover up these crimes? Afraid of going to jail if you acknowledge them? We know your government prosecutes those who speak up about it. - +1 y
@Avicenna Well that is a pathetic argument. "Has this legislation been struck down as unconstitutional?". You make it sound like the supreme court is working perfectly and is not at all dependent on who is in control of the government at the time and where its legal opinion changes DRAMATICALLY anytime there is a shift of power between the Democrats and Republicans such as in the case of Roe.
Objectively speaking, they can't be an arbiter of truth if they keep changing their fucking minds all the time and it is literally a politically appointed position which means it inherits that political bias and will rule whatever the controlling party considers "constitutional". If a pro-slavery party gains control then the supreme court will rule that slavery is completely constitutional, as has been done before. So no. I do not take what the Supreme Court says at face value, because they are glorified politicians and they lie to my face and neither should you.
It is also telling that you recognize that this is a limitation on the freedom of speech but you justify it by saying "there are all sorts of limitations on speech in schools". Perhaps, but that does not inherently justify new limitations being put in. Just because there are an existing limitation on the first amendment does not mean that it justifies any and all future limitations. That is kindergarten logic, "But you let THEM do it so why can't I?"
If the bill limits the first amendment, you need to provide sufficient argument as to why this is required as part of the bill. There is no such argument inside this bill, therefore, even if you think everything inside this bill is good and required it is still unconstitutional because it lacks the basic requirement of what is supposed to be inside the bill because the author is fucking stupid and/or drunk and can't write one properly. - +1 y
@Avicenna Disney, like most corporations has a fiduciary duty to its shareholders. In this case the controlling party and the same ones who decided to launch its streaming service. They are in the driving seat so of course they are representing their own financial interest. Furthermore, Disneys streaming service is currently the biggest in the world which confers a lot of power towards Disney and in retrospect has been a good investment for them since they are now in majority control of the industry and can do with it as they wish.
And we have already talked about what Disney can do when they get their hands on something such as what they could exploit from a simple special district. They have plans for streaming, and unlike USA and most people on earth, Disney knows how to plan ahead in time by decades at a time. Maybe in 20 years we will finally realize what they have been building towards. But I digress.
As for me being Swedish, dont patronize me. I have more freedoms than you will ever have, fight me. Also, if you want to argue about who gets prosecuted for speech in Sweden, go ahead. We got a better track record than you do. This is not an argument you can win.
Also, please do tell me how Disneys special district is so much different from anyone elses? I would love to see what you misunderstood about that one. - +1 y
@Avicenna No. Gerrymandering is specifically attacking a fundamental part of the democratic process. This is a very clear attack against the country itself and fits perfectly with the definition of traitor since anyone who gerrymanders does so AGAINST the country by abusing the trust and functions of state in ways that goes against its intended purpose. That is what a traitor is and the fact that you can't accept that says more about you than it does about me.
As for "Business friendly". I think the fact that a governor is directly attacking a corporation specifically is completely incompatible with being business friendly. The reason why just hammers this home since it is completely arbitrary and if any corporation ever gets on the bad side of DeSantis they will get targeted too. This is not freedom for businesses, they are required to kiss the political ass to be allowed to operate safely within Florida until the next madman gets into office and at that point its just a roll of a dice. No corporation can make a 10 year plan here because they can't know what the next governor is going to do. Personally I would pull everything out of the state as quickly as I could because its too unreliable.
DeSantis time in Guantanamo is also already an established fact and as I have said, we have multiple testimonies of him and his part in the tortures. You can claim there aren't any evidence however many times you want but I am just going to respond with "Yes there is"... because there is.
Also, what the actual fuck is a "fake asylum seeker"? I would love to talk about rape in Sweden but you need to actually bring up something in the first place. At this point you are just making vague statements that are not even worth addressing.
The fact that he has the support of the Bushes makes me leery of him.
