Americans, is that rude to you?

My American friend was posting depressive posts on Instagram last week. I texted him to ask if everything alright. He thanked me for asking and said he just felt stressed time to time. Then I did not reply to the message. But after that day he seems a little offended to me. Was it rude that I didn't reply to his message?

I'm wondering if this is considered rude in your culture, because I've experienced the same thing with another American friend in the past.

If I started a conversation, is it so rude to keep it short?

I'm not an American, and I don't think it's rude to keep it short, but I probably would've texted him back "Okay. Lemme know if you wanna talk :)" or even just a "That sucks" or something to show you understand and are there for them. Not replying, I would argue, is a least a bit dismissive, and at best just lazy. Better to just not ask in the first place then.

Do you really mean to tell me that in your culture, it's normal not to at least respond with something?

Not responding to a question is obviously rude, but sometimes not responding to a message where he said he felt stressed wasn't all that condescending.

Not American, but I'd find it rude if someone started a conversation with me and then just disappeared. Don't mind short conversation but doesn't sound like you had a conversation at all, you just initiated one and then made it clear it wasn't one you really wanted.

It's the equivalent of someone just walking away mid conversation without any explanation.

Personally I consider that to be extremely rude and most discourteous.

If you start a conversation, at the very least show some politeness and common courtesy in making a reply to the receiver's response.

Keeping a conversation short makes some people think you don't care that much about them. Maybe he felt better because you reached out to him and you were the one to make him feel better.
