Do you set a budget and stick to it?

I'm in economics this semester and one of our assignments is helping a fictional couple set a budget. Do you find setting a budget is easy or hard to stick to? Have you ever had to make any tradeoffs on something on a budget just to make your ends meet?

Yes, I always have a monthly budget and stick to it, I'm from a working class background and being able to budget was seen as one of those life skills you have to have, , I usually put 5% to one side each month as a buffer in case something goes awry, if I don't use it its put into savings,
