Retarded is generally used to mean beyond stupid.


Despite originally being used to describe legitimate mental disability, society has changed the meaning as it has done to many words in the past.

This word has changed so many times in the last 100 years that all 3 definitions are still used today. (Though I think the only surviving instance of gay meaning happy is the one in that song.)
