When do you believe supporting a charity comes from the heart and not for publicity reasons?

Lets talk about in this case movie stars. Many celebs supports foundations and diffferent charities because they have money to give to those kind of institution or charities when these institutions really need money for research, or buy expensive equipments or anything that relates to social, medical, environmental, scientific, cultural, education, etc.

I do understand and some people may believe that some movie stars when helping charities some may do it for self promotion so they need to draw attention to them more than to the real cause of the charity but there are others possibly that do they do it from their heart.

But in order to get the word out so others are aware of the charity or know about the foundation ometimes you need publicity and the media to cover and publicize the thing. and when a movie star is the one who also endorses that, more people may tend to help more., because movie stars and celebrities have power to draw people.

I also know there are people who donate to social cause anonymously and dont need media or press to cover their causes that is where these celebs doing it from their heart, they relate to the cause and do it in a serious manner. But if the cause is not advertise how could people help or collaborate then if it is not cover by the press to know about it, even if some believe "Ohh this celeb brought the media to cover their cause just to self promote"

When do you know when it is for real and not to self promote when it is cover by the press or media?

One example. Actor Chris Pine and his dad always help LA Children Hospital for many years now, they go to read to the small patients and play with them to give them a little happiness

at the hard moments so im assume that financially they also help. I read a while ago people like criticizing this actor because they say "ohh he just do it for publicity and to self promote not because he does it from his heart".

So then I question. Is it that a celebrity can't do nice things for other people and not necessarily it is to self promote the whole time?

I've volunteered for several non-profits. I've noticed famous people are more likely to just give money or show up when the press is present. I can't think of one movie star who showed up other than these events.

That doesn't mean they don't volunteer. There are some caring individuals who work behind the scenes, but they rarely draw attention to themselves, so it can be hard to locate them.

Though I understand charity's need for money, I tend to see helping from the heart is more associated with actually helping in person rather than just having their business manager write a check.

I would imagine that much, if not most, of the time, it comes from BOTH- it's rare for a person to do something for only one reason, and you can feel both a need to self-promote AND help other people at the same time.

I support charities because I like what each does. I know not all people are like that; they do it for publicity.
