I saw this documentary about prison food and they showed this guy eating a strawberry.

As a standard food? I'd imagine not- they're tasty and nutritious, but hard to store for long times. I know, however, that prisons are big on having options to reward good behavior, and I could easily see better food being used as a motivator.
