What's a tradition of your country that it's seen as weird in the world?

The photo above shows a congregation of penitents, and this is a typical spectacle in my country and overall the part of Europe I am in.

Many Americans get disgusted because they associate the penitents outfits with the KKK, but they often don't know that the KKK actually copied those costumes that come from a millenary tradition.

Those penitents aren't racists or anything of the sort - their costumes are a mark of shame because they are sinners and as such have to chant and repent - men wear white, women wear black, and priests wear red or purple. The procession can be a bit creepy though, as penitents chant about death and dying overall - plus penitents are often required to walk barefoot and some of them affix animal skulls or even severed pig heads to their hoods.

sometimes, there's a misconception about the Day of the Dead... and it can be seen as worship to death, which is not the case, although, some people actually do that around here, but it isn't so widespread

it is though, a celebration of life and death... and your beloved ones that have passed away, and then yes... that's when it could get a bit weird, depending on your situation

for example, in school there's often a tradition to write verses about, how someone you like or appreciate could encounter their final rest, and the grim reaper will come to get them... lmao, I always thought that was a bit obscure, to write something humorous and witty about something so dark

We have a few informal customs in this part of the US that baffle outsiders. Taking food to families after the birth of a child or death of a family member is a common one. Waving on the road to people we don't know is another. When it comes to "traditions," I'm really starting to dislike the words tradition and traditional. It's true that some are time-honored, but many should rightly go away.

They are Christian, but they mix in a lot of the Pagan elements of the pre-Christianization era.
