The "Greatest Generation" was more than willing to sacrifice for another country: why can't Millennials and Baby Boomers do the same?

At the start of WW2 many Americans had to sacrifice every day materials like chocolate, gasoline, rubber tires, metal and even coffee so they could support other countries in the war effort. They started this sacrifice even before the US got involved in the war. Why are modern Americans so selfish? They can't be bothered to sacrifice anything for the greater good. They won't make any sacrifice at all unless it benefits them somehow.
