The "Greatest Generation" was more than willing to sacrifice for another country: why can't Millennials and Baby Boomers do the same?

At the start of WW2 many Americans had to sacrifice every day materials like chocolate, gasoline, rubber tires, metal and even coffee so they could support other countries in the war effort. They started this sacrifice even before the US got involved in the war. Why are modern Americans so selfish? They can't be bothered to sacrifice anything for the greater good. They won't make any sacrifice at all unless it benefits them somehow.

No they weren't. The Americans were strongly isolationist and had to be dragged into a war that by all accounts were in their national interest to participate in. Americans only came around to supporting the war because of a few key events allowed the politicians to manipulate the people, namely things like Pearl Harbor.

Outside of Americans being manipulated like this they have always been incredibly self centered. Be it how they refused to initially get involved in WW2 or modern MAGA "America number 1" nonsense or even the whole American independence thing where Americans were partially upset about the British taxing them to pay for the war that Britain fought in defense of the American colony.

America has a proud history of being an entitled spoiled baby.

Sacrifice for the greater good of humanity. The environment is dying, Ukraine is being invaded and we have a migrant crisis. There are other people who need help more than we do but Americans are always complaining "What about me?"

I think you’ve misidentified the problem. You’re asking people to sacrifice when they themselves are under a lot of financial pressure and have nenn screwed over by corrupt elites who tell us to sacrifice while they get ever fatter and richer. Ask these elites to make the sacrifices.

Strangely, the elites pushing this have shown absolutely no interest in making any sacrifices of their own and most of the rest of the world isn’t doing anything to indicate that they believe that either. Under those circumstances, it makes no sense to ask ordinary people in the US to make the sacrifices. And sacrificing for Ukraine and illegal invaders who are illegally invited in en masse by the same elites who refuse to do any sacrifices of their own despite their. enormous personal resources? Please.

We have huge problems with poverty, structural economic change, the country’s financial well-being (public finances), homelessness, our borders, mental health and substance abuse (closely related to our insecure borders), . I’d say all of those things deserve all of our attention instead.
