What is with the politicians when they announce that they are going to run for president?

You'd be hard-pressed to find any potential candidate's exploratory committee that comes back and says, "you have no chance at winning so don't even bother," even though that is exactly what should be said to at least half of them in any given election. There's also candidates who seem to join up solely to destroy another candidate. Tulsi Gabbard did this to torpedo Kamala Harris, and Chris Christie took down Marco Rubio in 2016, and appears to be intending to attack Trump this time, with no hope of securing the position for himself.

I laughed today when I got a text that Pence was running. There are only two Republicans that have a hope in hell in winning, and Pence isn't one of them.
All the rest do it for the fame, and the chance to be picked as the VP. I can't imagine anyone wanting Pence to be their VP.
