My patriarchal line is Prussian - that is Germany before Germany became a country and the Prussian King became the German Emperor. My forebear left before that happened so was never German. As he was from a slavic enclave around Hamburg I might carry some slavic genes and have some western slav.

I have black Scots in me plus Irish. The rest is England English

Did your Prussian forebear leave circa 1848? If you are not aware a lot of Prussians did after the 1848 rebellions were squashed. My forebear was intending to go to the US but diverted to Australia to join the gold rush. Sam Houston rejected his job application anyway.

Worth looking at as you might find some interesting stuff. As background 1848, year of the communist manifesto, was the first flush of the industrial and the mill owners and factory workers barricaded Berlin of course troops were sent in, and people died. The Prussian King was forced to apologize to the dead - the first political apology ever. All the crowns fell that year but order was restored so the 48'ers scattered across the globe. One of my ancestor's friends went to the US and during your civil war formed a German brigade. The funny thing was his brigade got a bit ragged during a battle, so he stood up in front of them and drilled them, as bullets were whizzing around. When they settled down he went back behind the lines. Different attitude back then with muzzle loaders.

His name was Willich or Villich off the top but would need to look it up.. It would a typically weird coincidence if we had a connection on GAG. :) :)

Do delve into it. A lot of the '48ers ended up doing something significant in their adopted homelands. Even a quick google might find something.
