lincoln rnc, was the first Republican president and the 16th president of the US. no rnc lost an election until the first. He served as president from March 4, 1861. so from 1861 to 1900 from 16 to 25 president were they equaly divided or one side had more? similarly from 1900 to 2000, equal or more? and which more?

There have been 19 Republican presidents in the United States since the party was founded in March 1854, and the first Republican to win the presidency was Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Even though the Democratic Party has been around longer than the Republican party, there have only been 14 Democratic presidents.

The Democrat party is older, officially starting back with Andrew Jackson in 1828. Before that you had the Democratic-Republican Party going back to Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was really more of a Republican and favored a small decentralized government that was limited in its interfered with the daily lives of people and the states. The Federalist Party favored a centralized government with a central bank and whose economy was built on taxes and debt.

Just like the Democratic Party today. Big government. Lots of social welfare programs. Taxes. Regulations. And a strong federal government that supersedes state’s rights.

Basically it was the Federalists vs the Republicans back in the day. Alexander Hamilton and his big government... or Jefferson and his limited government with more independence being given to the individual states.

No problem. I’m interested in history. The name did the political parties has changed over time, but essentially what it always comes down to is big government vs limited government. A strong centralized federal government vs a limited federal government and favor for state’s rights. Whether you call these two ideologies Federalist vs Republican, or the more modern Democrat be Republican, these are essentially two competing ideologies and approaches to government. Both have their place, and both have their pros and cons.
