No. The man had a chance to turn Russia into a 21st-century country; a place that transcended the awfulness of its history and genuinely became something better; he opted to continue the kleptocracy and try to rebuild glory atop a mountain of skulls.

It the 1770's, George III had a very shaky hold on the English crown. When the protests from the American colonies reached his ears, he had a golden opportunity: had he simply given them some seats in Parliament, the whole crisis would've fizzled away, and he'd've gone down in history as a new kind of Enlightenment-style ruler, who embraced the principles of self-government and helped push the world into a golden age. Instead, he pissed away the wealthiest lands on the planet, and set the stage for the collapse of the English empire- all because he wasn't English enough.

Putin had a similar chance to reshape history: if he'd come forward in 2008 and told the international community that it was time to open a dialogue about how national borders might be redrawn without resorting to bloodshed, he could've shown himself a man of vision and honor, who sought to build Russia into something glorious, a shining monument to the potential of humanity. It almost certainly wouldn't've WORKED, but it might've- and it would've set the precedent that it was time for a new way of doing things. Instead, we got more blood, death, and misery.

We already have more than enough of that, Vlad; we don't need more.

No. But I admire him. He's a great world leader.

Putin has managed to somewhat turn that economic disaster around and has poised Russia for growth.

Despite western sanctions and U. S. efforts to destroy Russia, the IMF predicted that Russian GDP would rebound slightly in 2023 to 0.3 percent growth, and in 2024, the Russian economy is predicted to grow by 2.1 percent.

That's higher than the IMF's projection for the United States, which it said would see only 1 percent GDP growth that year, and down from a predicted 1.4 percent in 2023, and the 2 percent the U. S. enjoyed in 2022.

BRICS is growing. Due to Putin, Russia is gaining alliances.

Putin has learned that the "western" economic model doesn't work. He has also managed to fend off U. S. economic and military aggression.
