3.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Well, President Putin certainly puts on a show, but the question is oddly misplaced. Mr. Putin is a Russian nationalist. Trained in the KGB back in Soviet days, he has the strategic vision and tactical acumen of an agent and a political operative. However, he is not a Communist ideologue and has the advantage of pursuing Russian national interests unfettered by ideological baggage.
In domestic policy, he is in a long line of Russian autocrats going back to the Tsars. Russian democracy has a spotty record, very briefly after the 1917 revolution somewhat under Alexander Kerensky, hapahazardly and imperfectly under Boris Yeltsin.
Thus, Mr. Putin, no doubt in part because it suits him personally, but also because it is more consistent with Russian culture and political history, governs as an autocrat. Making accommodation, as the Tsars did vis-a-vis the pan-Slavs, the Orthodox Church, the military and the aristocracy, only as necessary to maintain his power.
In terms of foreign and defense policy, the key to understanding Mr. Putin is likewise understanding Imperial Russia's foreign policy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mr. Putin has most doggedly pursued Russian influence in Central Asia, the Caucasus and especially Ukraine. Also, the Middle East, consistent with Russia's historic policy of seeking an outlet to the sea.
In that connection, Mr. Putin has steered clear of the kinds of adventures in Africa and Latin America that communist ideology drew the Soviet Union into back in the Cold War era. Unlike the Soviet Union, whose ideological ambitions were confined by Russian geography, demographics and economics, Russia does not seek global domination. Rather instead Great Power status and a "sphere of influence."
It is true that Russia has "interfered" in elections in Europe and the United States to varying degrees. However, unlike in the Communist era, this has been haphazard, not especially professional and is more a strategy of trying to distract one's great power rivals rather than incite a world revolution.
Mr. Putin is not, heaven knows, a nice person. However, his driving force is Russian nationalism and realpolitik, not a transnational global ideology. This means, at some level, that he deals in splittable differences and, theoretically at least, while an alliance between the US and Russia is inconceivable, an accommodation, not unlike the Anglo-Russian entente of the pre-WWI era, is not impossible.
For that to happen, however, on the American side we need to think outside of the Cold War prism. Old habits die hard.20 Reply

+1 yOn a scale from one to ten… ZERO! The guy is a legitimate DICK! A homicidal psychopathic DICK… with actual power! From what I’ve read on him, those who have interacted with him, describe him in terms that perfectly describe someone who suffers a borderline personality disorder with narcissistic tendencies! He has murdered journalists for merely writing let’s-than flattering articles about him. He’s murdered any political rivals who had any legitimate chance of defeating him at the ballot. Also, he has ordered the summary assassination of political enemies in foreign countries like Great Britain, which is an act of war! Further, his government has “rigged” elections so poorly and obviously, that in one presidential election, he received more votes than actual voters, and of course he is the only “democratically elected” President to ever consistently receive 100 percent of the vote! Even though a brave contingent of voters protested against the 100 percent results stating THEY themselves did not vote for him, so how could it be 100 percent?

I presume you are not Russian and have never been there or met him, but judge by the TV frenzy you are exposed to?
Russians value stability/basic safety over risk taking for money making - Putin provides that, and understands the people there are very different to Americans - no shooting guns on the streets, no risking terror or being blown up.
It's a different culture. - +1 y

@CrazyGirl2 very well said and very well presented.

3) He Wants To Bring Back The Soviet Union, And He'll Do Whatever It Takes To Make It Happen
This is why Trump loves him, and wants to emulate him.
4) He has used state sponsored businesses and events like the Winter Olympics to garnish HUGE amounts of money for his personal wealth. He is thought to be, unofficially, the wealthiest man alive. How is that possible in a place like Russia, with their economy? Hmmm... you tell me.
5) Every single election he's ever won has been rigged or influenced by the fear of reprisals. You think not? Over time, the Putin regime systematically consolidated its domination over politics, turning elections from a democratic contest into a controlled system that delivered regime victories.
Russian elections are now state-directed performances that eliminate opposition. Random targeted arrests and violence – especially against those who try to lead alternative political movements – are common. Alexei Navalny, leader of a reform movement and now recovering from a poisoning, could tell us a lot about that. So could Yegor Zhukov, a student blogger who was arrested and convicted of extremism and then beaten outside of his home for his political actions.
Even eliminating viable opposition can’t ensure certain victories at the polls. To eliminate all risk, as Russia demonstrates, autocrats must take four additional steps:
Dominate the media message by controlling major news outlets through ownership, creating laws that stifle press freedom and repressing outspoken journalists.
Assert control over local government officials who then ensure that voters turn out to support the regime.
Build a vote tabulation process that allows ballot stuffing and falsified vote counts.
Declare victory immediately and allow no questioning of the results.

@msbrightness @msbrightness You truly are an idiot if you believe that shit. LOL An absolute, total fucking idiot !!
Putin is among the most disgusting people on the planet. A simple test is - does Trump like him? Well, yes, so... he's vile.
But let's stick to his own merits and start with just a few VILE things about this man:
1) He's Been Waging War Against A Free Press Since He Got Into Office
Putin believes there's no better way to silence your critics than snuffing them out and replacing their message with your own. When he came into power, he immediately seized control of nearly every Russian television network, newspaper, and radio station and put them under the direct control of the Kremlin after exiling or arresting the station's owners for reasons he pulled directly out of his frigid anus.
2) He's Killed Journalists, Political Opponents, And His Own Citizens To Get His Way
It's the oldest trick in the tyrannical dictator's handbook: Someone stupid enough to disagree with the way things are run winds up dead under "mysterious circumstances." This kind of thing happens so often in Putin's Russia that I wouldn't be surprised if parents tell their kids folktales of The Poots, the bare-chested snow beast so insecure in his masculinity that he'll snatch you away if you don't say nice things about him.
Dozens of Putin's critics have been killed over the years. One such instance happened only a couple weeks before this column was published. It was an ex-KGB agent who was linked to the intelligence dossier which claimed that Trump was being blackmailed with a video of himself enjoying a golden shower performed by two Russian prostitutes. - +1 y

under this president, our economy is not developing, medicine is mired in corruption, the salaries of teachers, doctors and nurses are small, health care is very poor in the regions, social payments are less than in many other countries. high prices for gasoline and gas, despite the fact that we export them in large volumes. more than 70% of young people dream of moving to another country. at the same time, the minimum wage is very low, it is not enough for a full life

- +1 y
Yeah, you really love shitting on America, Yet you just dismiss the truth coming from a woman who actually LIVES in Russia, & knows EXACTLY what is going on in her own country, and is telling you what a terrible place it is under Putin! She literally told you that more than 70% of younger Russians have fled the country! Meanwhile over 150,000 migrants are illegally entering the US, EVERY month! Upon arrival on US soil they immediately turn themselves in to Homeland Security/US Border Patrol, because they know that they will be allowed to stay! The United States has an estimated 20 to 30 MILLION illegal aliens. That’s 20 to 30 million people who ALL risked their lives (with countless unknowns actually losing them) hiking through hundreds of miles of arid desert, just for a CHANCE at having a life, and raising their children in the United States, who would ALL disagree with you, and your childish obsession with this murderous thug! Yes, while I may “only” be 18, as you are keen to point out, I believe I have a more firm grasp on the reality at play here than you… regardless of whether you are “more than twice my age” or not! I highly believe that @RonyBorgo the Russian woman you so condescendingly dismissed might agree with me!
- +1 y
@CrazyGirl2 go to America to become fat then.
- +1 y
@CrazyGirl2 What are you talking about, whitegurl? I lived in an actual 3rd world country for a few years (Argentina, before you ask me). You know what? Life is much better there than it is in the US, despite all the economic chaos that that country has been facing since 30 years ago. We have zero reasons to be proud of this giant shithole the US is.
- +1 y
@RonyBorgo - I lived in Russia for 12 years. So what ARE you blubbering about? Minimum wage in Russia is liveable. Far more than many western countries can say. In Moscow the average monthly minimum wage is 1,300 rubles & the average monthly rent is 600 rubles. There are Americans who'll cut off their arms to have that luxury as some barely make enough to pay rent. ... As for your economy yes it is developing, the medication is mired in corruption in many countries go visit the UK as a dang good example, health care is poor is many countries, high prices for gas - that's what happens when you export something excessively as with any in-demand export in many countries... Social payments are low, yes because like China & other eastern countries Russia isn't much for supporting people who are on welfare. Some countries in the Mediterranean you have to contribute to the society for years before they even consider paying you a peanut in welfare / social support & why so many "refugees" never settled in these areas but rather bleeding cash cow welfare countries like Sweden, UK, etc.

@gespenster_division there is a huge level of naivety if you actually need proof that Putin allowed an FSB operation to be carried out with out his say so.
If this was the case, then those 2 FSB agents would have been disposed of.
Since they are alive, well Putin was very much aware of it.
When you consider he was the head of it and it was his baby and is close friends with Patrushev and Bortnikov (current head, reports directly to Putin).
Hence anyone saying Putin was not aware or involved, consulted etc, is incredibly naive. - +1 y
