You can't blame this on Biden. This existed when Trump, Obama, Bush and Clinton were in the White House.. However, the real cause of this situation is the long-ago closing of mental health institutions during the Reagan era.
There were abuses in those institutions, so they were closed wholesale instead of the feds and states attempting to solve the problems that occurred there: hiring competent caretakers, paying and training them properly.
Now there are a few outpatient group homes, but no one wants them in THEiR neighborhoods... And again there are limited competent caretakers and almost no money to support small group homes with better oversight.
Most of the people in these situations, besides the few working poor who find themselves homeless, are drug and alcohol addicted and mentally ill. Mental illness and addiction care is costly. Unless people are arrested and forced into short-term mental health care, with medication oversight, these people never get better. The ones on the street don't take their medication because once they run out or forget, they go into a downward spiral.
Many of these folk live "free" instead of at shelters. Shelters will not allow drug or alcohol use or bizarre behavior, or smoking, so hordes of people refuse to choose them and remain on the street begging with their host of problems. Watch "The Right to Fail," a devastating PBS documentary on homelessness and mental illness.
I'm about to do some volunteering with this population. Maybe i'll learn more, but Right to Fail was an eye opener.
You really cannot blame anything on Biden since he has no idea what is going on but it is a symptom of failed democrat policies. These cities all have democrat leadership, democrat DAs and democrat state government. There are laws that prohibit camping out on the sidewalk. There are laws against selling drugs and there are laws against possessing and using drugs and laws against public intoxication and public urination. The democrats refuse to enforce any of these laws. They want these people to vote for them.
The attitudes about drug addiction has changed. Liberals want people to think it is a disease and want insurance to pay for treatment. Years ago there was a tremendous amount of shame associated with drug addiction. I only knew one kid that ever used heroin and he was a bad kid that nobody wanted to hang out with. Now we have movie stars that are big druggies and everyone thinks they are cool. What really needs to happen is that the cops need to be able to do their jobs and run these people out of these camps. Give them a date to clear out and then bring the fire hoses to wash down the street and a front end loader to get rid of all the leftover stuff. Then if they come back they get arrested,
It is a shame what has happened to these people but nobody stuck a needle in their arms, they made the choice and it is not like it is a big secret that drugs are very addictive but there are small businesses that are trying to survive and the junkies are scaring their customers away, there are discarded needles all over the street and that puts first responders at risk when they have to come to an emergency situation and people who drive through the area have to deal with panhandlers coming ut to their car at a red light.. Democrats are putting taxpaying citizens at the the end of the line once again.
Biden is wholly incompetent but he isn’t responsible for the homeless issue directly although i directly through an awful economy. Neither is it Trump’s fault as the economy was booming when he was president, period. Its the mayors of the big cities along with their respective City Councils. The decisions at the local level have led to this AND they do nothing to change the tide.
They just put up "low income" luxury housing in an upscale neighborhood here and the "low income" people have already destroyed it. A similar development next to it at regular prices is sitting empty because people won't move in next door to this.
In the town I live in they tucked the low income housing in a side street that is behind McDonalds. Nobody ever sees it but I rea the police blotter in the local paper and half th ecalls are on that street. All domestic abuse, assault and battery, theft or some other disturbance.
Frankly, I think of several cities I'd be willing to hand over to Biden, if it'd stop him from ruining the damn COUNTRY.
I guess he heard someone say that "it's almost the thirties" and thought that meant we needed Hoovervilles and a World War again.
Those tents have 27 offers of 100K over asking price, sight unseen.
You must live in California where 2 bedroom condos go for a million plus.

We have 1920 zoning laws in a modern population. Rich people with houses refuse to vote anything to improve the house supply because it lowers the demand of their housing. It would crash housing pricing but that is the solution to the homeless problem.
People bet on house prices going up forever to retire on. They shouldn't have done that.
How would we change zoning laws? Make it okay to have high density housing? Biden wants to put housing projects in the suburbs so that everyone can benefit from their failed polices. They will be able to have gates round their homes and 24 hr security. The rest of us will just have to take our chances.
Have you seen these?

For lack of a better term, I'll call them pods. They are in Japan. People don't live there, it's just an option instead of a regular hotel room. Comfortable bed, TV, great sound system for music. How many of these could we have built in America instead of the billions we pissed away on Ukraine?
Yes, but do you know how much they have to pay to stay in one of those for the night? I'm all for helping the homeless but only if they are willing to help themselves. Most don't want to get off the dope or booze. Therefore, they should get no help unless they are willing to work. Even the Bible says that if a person does not want to work, than neither shall they eat. No free rides. There are plenty of public works that they could do. Ever see all the trash slobs throw out their windows along the roads? They can pick that stuff up. They can plant trees. They can clean sidewalks. They can clean public bathrooms. The illegals are willing to do this stuff so the homeless should get off of their butts and work too.
@Daniela1982
These are in Tokyo, so I'm sure they are very expensive. But that's not the point. Biden is putting up illegals in five star hotels. Do you know what Antabuse is?
Make all of the pod people take it. And instead of the big drug companies producing a vaccine that doesn’t work, have them create a drug like Antabuse, but for drug addiction. Some of the pod people would rather live on the sidewalk, but many would want the help. And give them jobs!
Do you know what Suboxone is? It’s synthetic heroin, and the government gives it to prisoners. It’s a big money making scheme. Get the pods. Get the drugs like Antibuse. Get them jobs, and get the needles off the street. And fire all the useless counselors that think that talking works.
@taffy1234. Our Socialist mayor leased a bunch of mini houses and had them put on the grounds of an old hospital that has been shut down. The vandalism started as soon as they moved in. Nobody really wants to live there because it is too far to go together drugs and the panhandling is not too great either. A year from now the city will have to purchase those little houses and pay to have them demolished be a use they will be destroyed by then.
That is not going to get drug addicts or people too lazy to work off the streets. The pods seem like a good idea but they need a public bathroom at each location and people to clean the pods and keep them up. Who is going to pay for this? If they are going to give money away I'll take some.
The thought was good but the execution left something to be desired. Remember when Katrina hit? Everyone took up residence in a sports stadium.
@Daniela1982
The pods in Japan have community bathrooms and showers. You would clean your own pod or not. Those who chose to just shoot up on the sidewalk could be sent to tent cities in the desert. Remember Sheriff Arpaio?
If you want free money move to Ukraine. I'm not sure what Katrina or the Superdome have to do with this. Also, about costs, there are two guys in San Fran that make $250,000 spraying shit off the sidewalk. They pay other people to pick up the needles.
But I'd love to hear your plan for solving this problem. Do tell.
I already told my plan. Have them work for their benefits or GTFO! I have to work for my health benefits and everything else I have. But why work when you can freeload off the taxpayers. We saw that during Covid when people were getting paid for not working, and then it was hard to get them to go back to work because they got more on unemployment from the government.
And here I thought it was a farmer's market.
It's all good as long as it isn't in a politician's neighborhood.
I've helped with homeless ministries, and I think people would be shocked at how many homeless people refuse to go into available housing because they can't get drunk or high in the units.
Nothing is more boring than a trumper whining about problems he has no solutions for.
Democrats aren’t the least bit embarrassed they’re destroying the US.
i am not okay with it. it is awful. this is a bold and well aimed promotional post.
I say relocate it to Martha's Vineyard, the Hamptons, and wherever else ueber-wealthy Democrats hide from ordinary people.
We already have people living on the streets in the city.
More than you know.

I know it's in my town too. I pass by little " homeless villages " every day. They are not always drug addicts or drunks. They are people who fell on hard times and lost everything.
The only thing thats fixes that are good jobs. Trump had our economy breaking records and now Biden has us breaking records un a bad way.
Its about the economy, stupid! This should be our mantra in 2024.
They said affordable housing not affordable mansions so I am not surprised.
trollolol xD but seriously tho: i think this is more the result of American decline overall which both parties have worked on very hard over the last decades.
Don't be an idiot.
It's very unbecoming.
You are better than that.

But t least they'll have "housing" as opposed to living in a box, like republican controlled cities
Most Republucan cities would never allow things to get that bad. Most democrats have no self respect. They see 'little", crimes like drug dealing, looting, graffiti and assault as not worth prosecuting. Once you get them to stop breaking windows all the other c rimes go away as well
But they're not worth preosceuting. LMAO. Why should they.
THEYRE SMALL CRIMES. MISDEMEANORS
You know most murders happen in republican states?
prosecuting*
GET OVER IT DUDE, you're GOING TO LOSE
I wouldn't put it past someone like Newsom to force people to house homeless drug addicts in their homes or on their property.
Will there be human excrement in the streets? How about the rat population?
Looks like my neighbors
Cheap shot and untrue.
Sure it is. Any homeless or illegals set up shop in their neighborhood they are rounded up and shipped out to another city, or state.
