Why does the West Coast have such a better quality of life compared to the East Coast of the US?

I feel a lot safer in California than I do in New Jersey. Californians are wealthier and more polite also. Better food, better healthcare, better beaches, hotter women, you name it.

Choosing New Jersey to represent the entire east coast is funny to me no offense to you or to anybody from New Jersey! I would rather live in California than live in New Jersey but I mean! Is this a fair comparison?

For example, how about Virginia, or North Carolina, or South Carolina, or Georgia, or Florida, or depending how you feel about cities what about NYC and Boston, or if you like winter how about Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine?

However I will say that in general, the east coast especially the northern part of it has had established cities for hundreds of years vs the west grew more recently so you would expect some differences from that. JMO!

It’s definitely a different lifestyle. I’ve been to California on trips but I’ve only lived in the Northeast. I feel pretty safe where I live but I live a very sheltered life out in the country (though we do go to the beach on vacation).

I don’t feel safe in Hartford, Boston, Bronx NY, Baltimore, and DC. Make Oakland look like a children’s playground.

I don’t live in or near a city. Where I live is basically suburban or rural. Plus I didn’t say I lived in New Jersey. Though parts of New Jersey (like the beaches at Ocean Grove or Loveladies) are really nice.

Depends on what part of California. Big cities are not safe and never will be but the suburbs have had a rise in crime in California. There are other issues the state has but it sounds like you're just talking about safety. Also never been to New Jersey but I have been to other western and mid-western states. There are plenty of places that could be safer.

East coast culture is far more edgy and aggressive than west coast; that's a big part of it. I don't think I'd say the quality of life is better in the portions of CA that I visited though (the bay area).

I never felt unsafe, but there is trash and urine-soaked hobos absolutely everywhere.

It's right-wing propaganda, crime and homelessness in California is the same as it's been for years. People are moving out because the cost of living is going up. California also has excessive rental criteria (monthly income must be 3x the rent, need to put 4-5 grand down before moving in).

New Jersey is a dump. Try to check out VA or the Carolinas., Florida is gaining population by the day while people are fleeing California in droves, They have lost so many people that they have lost at least two congressional seats.
