Short Answer, probably something like "tHaT woULd be COmmUNisM."

Long answer:
Lots of dollars were kindly donated by car and oil people to politics people, and the politics people were so happy about that kind donation they build more and more roads for cars. Which made more room for more cars but sadly pushed everything else further and further away, so people had no choice but to rely on their cars more and more often, which caused traffic jam, a lack of parking spaces and other problems, but gladly car and oil people made lots of money so they could donate more money to politics people. and so on.

Now you got the situation where the parking lot of a walmart is bigger than some medium size countries. Which is only traversable with a car.

In order to reverse it, you would need to completely rebuild the infrastructre, invest in alternatives like busses and trains, and tell car and oil people to fuck off. Which takes lots of time, and offcourse people are brainwashed to think the car is the only solution, which it is only because over the last decades cities were built this way.

And on top of this the cars are becoming bigger than most european houses, thusly needing even more space.

To be fair here, suburbs have sidewalks. Yes, restaurants are far away but because of distance, the serve large portions that can be of unhealthy nutritional value to begin with. Playing video games is easier and just as entertaining than going outside. Two, going outside consumes calories. Food costs money. Millennials and Gen Z are physically lazier anyway. Mentally, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Boomers and Xers eould have played video games, too if they could. Racism, sexism, and classism are at play in all of that.

I purposely did not live in a city, I had a house built in a rural town with lots of space for my kids to play. To me the city is a place to be avoided. i could probably count the number of times I have been back to the city in the last 20 years on my fingers.
