To be open minded is to consider ideas and opinions that are new or different to your own. What you might not have considered is that 1) someone can consider your ideas and then judge them wrong. 2) your ideas are not new to them. They have already considered them before and deemed them stupid after consideration and you parroting the same dumb ideas is just a waste of their time.

problem is when you present them with facts and evidence or they fail to present facts and evidence on their behalf

they get offended and their only arguments left is insults and slander and character assassination or trying to cancel you

Depends on their intellectual maturity. There is nothing that says you can't be open minded with someone you completely disagree with, and that is basically what a scientific discourse is. The problem is that a lot of people either dont care or perhaps care too much about their own position to actually entertain the other side of the argument.

As such, this statement mostly just applies to people who are not particularly serious about their beliefs.
