"Why are you so pretty?"?

As a married black woman who is in good shape, tall and thin. I have two beautiful mixed race daughters but sometimes when I'm out and about in public people ask my daughter who is only 3 "why are you so pretty?"... should I take offense to this because I feel like these strangers should be able to see that me and my husbands genetics made her so beautiful. I feel like it's a slap in my face that a question should be even asked, am I wrong? Do you know any good comebacks I could tell people when they do this to me.

It might be a rhetorical question designed to hyphenate the girl's beauty through contrast and not a derogatory claim about how unattractive her parents are. Not everybody considers the implications or premises that are staged by the words they choose, cause not everybody is intellectually calculating when they choose to comment on things they see. Some people observe the full throttle of premises and implications when they speak, and others are surface purveyors who only scope things by impression and emotion, or react to situations at a lower sensory and rational level.

I don’t think that they’re seriously asking.. sounds rhetorical. Like when you see a cute animal.. some people say “how are you so cute?”. They’re not actually asking. It’s a compliment.

Teach your daughter to say "Mommy and Daddy sacrificed a racist to the devil to make me pretty!". Guarantee they won't ask ANY more questions.
