This family apparently commits the unpardonable sin of homeschooling.
As a German I find it quite offensive that the obligation to send children to school was seen as persecution by our transatlantic ally. I'm glad this mistake has been corrected. Let me highlight that the children have a right to an education that is up to the general standards. This has to be weighed against the wish of the parents to indoctrinate their children.
However, considering that the initial decision caused them to stay legally for 15 years already, I would encourage the U. S. to let them stay simply based on the undue hardship that deportation would mean, especially to the kids who have spent most of their lives in the U. S.
(Sorry, I'm not familiar with what the U. S. is doing to protect its borders. It seems to be a completely different issue.)

Why shouldn’t a parent be able to decide where they want their child educated? They have custody over the child, not the state.
And the whole push toward homeschooling in the US is precisely BECAUSE of government indoctrination and the lousy school system that exists here. All the homeschooled kids I knew were smarter than like 90% of the people I went to school with. Parents do a better job than the schools do in most cases has been my experience.
But beside that though, why are we favoring more state control and less individual freedom?
Alright, it is up to the receiving country to decide if the situation represents valid grounds for asylum. If they value individual freedom that highly in the U. S. they are very welcome to have these people. However, it seems to me that this puts the bar very low and the U. S. should then also accept a lot more people from the Middle East.
Germans have always migrated to the U. S. and will continue to do so. Personally, I prefer a lot more state intervention than is customary in the U. S., but I realize one can hold different opinions there. I was even planning to move to Wisconsin once, but this was mainly for a woman, not for her country as such.
Accept taking in a bunch of refugees has nothing to do with the individual freedoms American citizens enjoy here at home

@Exterminatore Unfortunately, we are ruled by grifters and Ukraine was their biggest grift. So much wealth sucked out of the place by local and Western elites that it had the weakest economic outcome of any post-Soviet country, and that was before the war. If they win, BlackRock and friends will own the place and Zelensky eliminated worker protections. They’ll try to replace the men with third-world migrants. Better for Russia to take it at this point.

As far as I can discern, yes, Russia did take the Crimea about 7 years ago. I don’t know much of the background on that, but it looked like an unprovoked expansion. This time around I know about the Minsk accords. I know how that battalion of Nazis continued to violate that peace treaty prompting Russia to invade.
Why did Zelensky even let them do that? He had to know what’s going on now would be the inevitable result. He had to know if Russia invaded, but yet the Ukraine was victorious somehow, whoever helped them win would basically own the country.
Did he do that so he would be made an elite basically? Sell out his country looking like some hero in the process, get cut in on some sweet deals and ride off into the sunset while he left everyone else holding the big?

@Exterminatore If they are willing to see and think of course they will know this. I’m convinced most people in the US are not ready to look at reality head-on. Too many are blissfully ignorant. There is also something else at work. The drive to attain power is well known, but people also tend to have a drive to demonstrate loyalty to power. This results in people hewing slavishly to the narrative of the elites. You see this dynamic a lot within the managerial class and among white college educated women. Another dynamic is the unfortunate jingoism that got inculcated among American conservatives. To be on the wrong side of the war would shatter their perception of America and cause intense cognitive dissonance. It’s just easier to buy into the ridiculous narratives.

I’d add to that the propaganda levels are strong. Even now that people see politicians and the media are full of crap, they don’t ask why. Where all this is coming from. I think people are fundamentally lazy and willing to go along with the perception of getting along. They don’t want to divert time from filling their heads with social trends to have to actually think and figure out what’s going on. They love the superficial because they’re generally unintelligent and that suits their their level of intellect.
@Exterminatore With continued de-dollarization people will be shaken from their stupor. Then the question will be whether the elites manage to blame some group that is undesirable to the regime, or turn the diverse population into fighting and divided factions, or whether they get cleared out from power.
I think they will up the ante region by region intentionally creating hostility amongst various factions to impose martial law. I think they are gonna win, and all of this going on is connected to the Antichrist and the prophesies predicted for the end of times in the Bible.

I don't think they are persecuted. I would also point out that they are EU citizens and can move to the 26 of the other countries in the EU without a visa.

@strateguy632 - An immigration judge incorrectly recognized them as persecuted in Germany which was corrected by a higher court now.
Compulsory schooling is the backbone of the German education system and vital to our society. It is in line with UN principles. In fact, it may be argued that the parents are infringing on their children's' human right to an education equivalent to that of other children.

@WhiteBoyChill - That's true. However, compulsory education predates Nazism by a long stretch, and it has served us well in democracy.
In my own school class there was a girl whom her parents wanted to keep at home to look after her younger siblings and do housework. She was picked up by the police and brought to school a couple of times until the parents gave in. This was all quite shocking, even though the officer tried to be very friendly with us kids. Still, the right of children to education is important and the intervention was justified.

Having attended secondary schooling in England and seeing the poor state of education in America I'm thinking home schooling at least to a certain level is the best option for my kids, only for a time until they have the right foundation. I mean if parents can clearly show their kids can get a better education at home than say at a failing German school it shouldn't be an issue. Maybe there are certain social & political messages or propaganda schools in Germany want to enforce on German kids unrelated to academia. My cousin married a German woman and she talks about of that.
The parents could move to Belgium, Holland, Poland, Austria and just work in Germany across to boarder.

@WhiteBoyChill - I do not want to convince you that the U. S. should not do home schooling. The main point for me is that it will not be introduced in Germany or in Switzerland as this is where I'm living now. Your country can do this as they see fit. I only think it is arrogant to term it as "persecution", but indeed this mistake has been corrected and asylum has been denied for these Germans. I have no issue with that, though I have a slight preference for them to stay in the U. S.

For home schooling in particular the downside is that you have religious extremists isolate their kids from other views and indoctrinate them. In addition to Christian extremists like the ones in the video we also have Muslim families whose kids can benefit from a bit of integration at school.
By the way, we do have private schools some of which are run by churches so it is not all bleak for the devout.
The other issue is of course that most parents are not qualified as school teachers. Division of labor is a useful thing in civilization and teaching a whole class is more efficient, too. Of course, this German family breeds like rabbits so they are halfway to a decent class size already.

2023 is probably worse than 2022. My estimate is conservative. Also informed by witnessing crowds of young men and boys who crossed the border walking north up the rural roads around here and seeing locals get displaced from their rentals when the feds bid up the price to house refugees, who are getting benefits at the social security office and help with employment.
