Why have bikes become a symbol of rebellion against society in modern times?

After WW2 guys came home from the war and took to the road to try and make some sense from what they just went through. A lot of motorcycle clubs were formed. In the 50s movies like "the Wild One" came out that portrayed guys on motorcycles as rebels. Then in the 60s the Hells Angel's became popular and later turned into a criminal enterprise that dealt in drugs , especially meth. I think that motorcycle owners are going to age out. My wife had a patient yesterday that was sidestepped while he was riding his Harley. He is 94. A lot of these guys are in their 70s.
