On a scale from 1-10 how well can you take opinions?

Put me down for a 9. Given that I work in politics, it is almost requisite.

That does not mean that I have to agree with every opinion that I hear. Rather only that I listen and debate issues in a calm and modulated manner. Screaming and shouting, contrary to popular impressions, is not how democratic politics is played out day-to-day.

As a staffer, I have to deal with staff from the opposition side and they will, in the course of things, express opinions that I am naturally opposed to. Ditto, I no doubt, express opinions that they are opposed to. Yet to get the work done, a civil tone is required.

So it is a discipline. You listen to other side and work to reach agreements. By the way, just to add, given the nature of American politics and political parties, sometimes those disagreements are with people in the same party - not just between the parties.

That said, I rated myself a 9 because there have been moments when discussions become arguments. When the disagreements are at the most fundamental level. Much depending on the issue or issues being discussed.

However, that is, broadly speaking, the exception and not the rule. You may have to hold your tongue, but you are being paid to get the job done. To wit, you have to have a certain level of tolerance for the opinions of others and so you discipline yourself accordingly.

Though I would add that, as I have grown older I have observed that such a skill seems increasingly less common among younger staffers. That, suffice to say, is a problem.

I think it's 7 or 8, but it's hard to judge yourself, you'd have to ask the people I've talked to 😂
