Should sales tax be included in the displayed price?

The problem becomes USA has so many different tax zones that it's counter competitive for all the businesses.

Let's say there is a $50 thing close to your job and a 5% tax in that area. But the same thing for $50 the opposite direction has a 4.0% tax. Where do you buy from? 53.00 that is closer to your work or $50.00 plus tax the further away?

The businesses argues they cannot fairly compete locally available products prices based solely on local sales tax. With places that the same product with the same price is sold just accross street with a different sales tax exist.

No because it's not part of the price, it's a tax. Besides I think MOST people get what is taxable vs. What isn't. And if they don't most assume it's taced to be on the safe side.

What brother's me is places that have prices listed as 2 for "X" amount. Like 2 for a dollar. Then in significantly smaller type they put "or 1 for 59 cents. Because people 2 for a dollar and think they're getting one for 50 cents. Then they get to the register and find out it's 9 cents more. They don't want to take the time to put it back. But they still b**** at the register person about it like he made the prices, or the sign for that matter. Most businesses do this knowing this happens and they don't care because thier attitude is it's worth the 9 cents, go ahead and abuse out workers.😆

Absolutely. I probably wouldn't buy a lot of the stuff I buy if the tax was included on the shelf price. Stores probably know that, and so that's why they continue to do things the way they do.

For the vast majority of people this is not true. For those people why should they be subjected to having to mentally or physically calculate the sales tax on items where the sales tax is not displayed before buying them?

Perhaps displaying the price both before and after taxes added on the in-store shelf tag would be the fairest thing to do.

That said, catering to a few organizations that don't have to pay sales tax is not fair.

I think so. That and any kind of fees the customer is covering in the sale.

It's not cool for people to think they're paying one price for something only to have the real bill be substantially higher because the merchant is passing off a bunch of additional expenses to them. It's especially bad with hotel fees.
