He is absolutely right. I can't figure out what the Republicans are doing or why they are doing this except perhaps to promote conspiracy theories about Biden before the election. I think they've overstepped a bit and they are making themselves look ridiculous.

It's not both sides that are starting impeachments without evidence of a crime. That's just Republicans. Trump did make a phone call to Ukraine demanding political aid from a foreign government (we never got to hear it, but I'll bet it sounded like the Georgia call), and nobody would have been in DC on Jan 6 if Trump hadn't called them there and deliberately sent an armed mob to the Capitol to interfere in the election.

Oh, yes, Clinton was impeached for lying about an affair. He really did lie, and that really was a crime, it just had nothing to do with the "investigation", and should never have been brought.

I've since been convinced that the Democrats should have voted against impeachment, but to convict in the Senate, after all, giving us a year or two of President Gore, and a certain win in 2020 over the people who impeached a president for lying about an affair.

Think about it. That might have meant no 9/11, so no Afghan war, and even if they had still happened, there would have been no Iraq war. It would have meant no Bush tax cuts, so a much lower national debt, and serious action on climate change, back when it would have been cheaper and with fewer "natural" disasters.

Of course the Republican who conviced me had a different idea why it should have happened, to do with playing politics.

They started with a real crime, both times. Blackmailing a foreign country for political gain (tell me the Ukraine call didn't sound like the Georgia one) and his obvious responsibility for Jan 6. An earlier impeachment attempt was about Trump using the office of the presidency to enrich himself (the US has come a long was from forcing Carter to sell his peanut farm in case he might affect profits from it).

The problem with prosecuting Trump isn't whether he committed crimes, it's choosing which ones to indict him for. (Don't forget the obstruction charges that should have come out of the Mueller report.)
