I don't know, and I don't even think many of them know. A few friends from high school got locked up for it. I never spoke to one about it, since we didn't talk anymore. The other was overwhelmed, trying to deal with postpartum, and snapped. She almost killed the baby. She always had a temper, but she also always loved babies. I've seen multiple female abusers who swear they love babies, but they are just not safe around them. It's not a conscious thing they are doing...

My mother was like that too. She was a good mom until I started looking more like my father around the age of 6. Then, she terrorized, neglected, and beat me head to toe until I bled multiple times a week for the next 6 years until I moved away. Anything I did would set off her temper. She was nice to every other kid, and she swears she loves kids.

My father was better until he lost his temper too. Then he would punch me, drag me by my throat or hair, scream at me, etc. He would also neglect me by not wanting to buy me food.

So, I think a lot of it is lack of control over their anger and using kids as punching bags. I have my parents' tempers, but I would never use my children as punching bags. My parents were also incredibly self absorbed people. My mother gave birth to me to get back at my father, then she treated me like a doll to make her look good instead of a person. My father only got custody of me after his parents pressured him to because he wanted to try to save money from paying child support... Kids cost more than child support so that didn't work out and just made him angry. He'd already abandoned me for 2 years and moved across the country. So, people who don't prioritize their children or really see them as humans who need care are more likely to abuse them.

I have had friends who keep having kids with no interest in caring for them well. One just wanted as many kids as she could have. But, she never took proper care of them. She fed them, but she and her partners would beat them over every little thing. Like a baby throwing a cup down to learn about gravity. Almost all of them are developmentally delayed. Even worse, she doesn't even let them go to school. But, she didn't finish high school, and her husband never went to school at all and was home schooled. But, she decided she could do better than any school could. It's not working. Funny story, her husband is a state senator trying to pass laws that hurt the public school system... That caused an immediate outrage across the country. She's a good friend, but she knows she's not the best mother. I love her kids, but I wish things had been better for them.

Every abusive parent I've known has known they were a bad parent and said as much. Why they didn't do better is the question. Only my Nana has a good answer for herself. In her day they didn't have google or a way to learn outside of people you knew. And, the people she knew taught her to care for children in abusive ways. She never knew it was wrong because everyone around her was doing it. In each generation of my family, the abuse did improve, but ti was all pretty bad. Like a grandmother who would stuff a shotgun full of saltpeter and shoot the kids with it if they ran away from a beating. She'd also tie kids to chairs for hours and stuff a sock in their mouth if they weren't quiet.

There's a lot of shite people out there. I did a lot of work on the dark web. There's a reason most of those folks do 6-month rotations. I lost an analyst one time who said she was "going back to CP where people are more normal." Dark web stuff doesn't even touch some of the stuff in real life. People ask why I live alone in the woods. Yeah... Yeah...
