The arbëreshë, i. e. the Albanians of Italy, also called Italo-Albanians, are the Albanian ethno-linguistic minority historically settled in southern Italy and the islands. Coming from Epirus and from the numerous Albanian communities of Attica and Morea, they settled in Italy between the 15th and 18th centuries, following the death of the Albanian national hero Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg and the progressive conquest of Albania by the Ottoman Turks. There were 8 waves of Albanian migration, but the first and last did not have colonial effects.
The first Albanian colony dates back to 1450, Contessa Entellina in the province of Palermo, while the last is Villa Badessa in the province of Pescara founded in 1742. The Albanians of Italy speak an ancient Albanian of the Tosca variety typical of southern Epirus.
