What you're alluding to is the "echo chamber".

Which is people believing and following whatever taps into whatever they already believe. They see it as "validation" instead of the confirmation bias that it is.

This is how politics works, in effect. You want to find issues and people you can exploit for your policies and causes. Give them a bone from the meal you make, and they'll think you "like" them and follow you to the end.

It was the Romans who perfected such demagogue politics. They would get groups and people to fight each other, while working them to death in their businesses and armies. The people thought the other was the enemy and their rulers wouldn't be so callous. Hence why most Roman emperors and overseers tended to get killed off.
