I'm alaskan native and my family is from a small village. No one would bat an eye being called an Indian. Not a big deal.

Here's where it gets different being on government paper work. It's not offensive just improper paperwork and bureaucracy. People do need representation in our government and alaskan natives suits us better then Indian. Athabaskan even better. same is said with all American natives with better names they would all call themselves.

Just speaking of names as Indians and native Americans being called Indians, I wouldn't say it's racist. It's still taught in schools today that native Americans were called Indian and in pop culture they're referred to as Indians too. It's a misunderstanding from the past that just stayed for one reason or another.
If your talking people then yes it could be racist to say a native American is an Indian.

I mean there is a difference. You can be really smart but still racist, where as this is just been dumb not racist.
Now if they implied been Indian was bad then that's racist, but confusing two things is just dumb or uneducated. If they think both are the same thing but bare no hate or bias towards such people then they can't be racist.
