We haven't actually paid Ukraine anything, or at least not much. The prices you see being floated in the media is largely just the estimated price of the cast-off outdated weapons we want to send them. It is shocking to learn but actually the US government pays a lot more attention to every dime of its budget than people give it credit for.

America invests enormously in Ukraine to have a more stable world and economy. If Russia manages to take over all of Ukraine, it will continue to occupy countries.

Russia will want to come after Ukraine, after the Eastern Bloc, the Western Bloc, later the USA (the eternal rival).
This is not done by a direct and military invasion but by attacking the USA from within with propaganda, people paid by the Russian system and useful idiots who think that Russia is something good even though they had no connection with Russia in any way.

Because the objectively correct position for USA to take is to support Ukraine against Russia to the point where Ukraine wins as soon as possible. Anything else undermines USAs position as a super power and therefore your national prosperity which means you would be a weaker and poorer country.

I, as someone who is not an American see no problem with USA becoming a 3rd world country but it does ask the question why you who would directly be impacted by this would be supporting your own national downfall.
