Is it best to think before you speak?

I used to just rush in and explode with anger in my youth. Now, instead, if someone makes me feel annoyed or hurt, I go away and take some time to process my thoughts and feelings and plan my response, which is generally assertive and never cruel. Is this the right way to handle negative emotions? I’ve found I’m getting on better with people now that I’ve changed my behaviour towards people, in terms of my response to others’ disrespect.
