i went to NC to help with disaster recovery after Hurricane Matthew. It’s like i went to 1890.
There’s a literal river. One side of which gets flooded after a storm. Black people live on that side. it’s the garbage land no one wants. cross over the river and there are colonial style homes I’m talking massive. and cotton fields. The average joe homes are cuter with wrap around porches. I’m telling you stuff straight out of stereotypes.
It’s disaster recovery so naturally you rub elbows with faith-based organizations that volunteer to help. There was this methodist group who is very active out there, i became friendly with some of the people who we worked alongside. one night for dinner, the church invited us over. i expected it was an open invite. i’d even said to some of the guys “see you at dinner tonight”. imagine the degree of discomfort when it’s a white-only church and you’re invited to dinner there. and you have to smile and be polite. they’re polite AF but i knew they have the blackest hearts.


everyone has impeccable manners. what does that mean in the grand scheme of things? they hold the door and say ma’am. but seriously, there’s a socioeconomic gap that they’re completely fine with and the segregation is real


i’ll never forget north carolina. i cried in public and had to get a hug from a friend. and then you go to the raleigh-durham area and it’s like a new century, a different country

You sure it was hurricane Matthew? It was more likely hurricane Hazel in 1954. I’m live in NC, sure there are some people racist, but the racism all over the world. NC is a great place to live we have people of all race here and for the most parts we get along quite well. Yes I live near Raleigh and Durham.

2017. i don’t mean anything personal against north carolinians. it was a culture shock for me and i realize maybe there’s tons of racism around me that i probably don’t see as racism because it’s normal to me when i’m in my own environment. it’s like pointing out water to a fish

i didn’t know there was that level of divide. i wasn’t expecting that church people, who preach all kinds of love and shit, could be completely comfortable with the status quo.

raleigh-durham and the research triangle are cool. i was in an area called Tarboro. And there’s an all-black community called princeville. it’s pretty much uninhabitable land. in CA, it would be made i think a wetland wildlife reserve and built a causeway over it. in NC, it’s where people of a certain color have homes. and i like prefab sort of manufactured homes standing on cinder blocks. those were the homes we were rebuilding. i saw for sale signs for the damaged homes going for $2000, with the lot of land they stand on. the county/state wasn’t permitting a lot of the home repairs, and had newer code requirements that the locals can’t afford

briefly, when i left i started looking for a job out there in raleigh-durham. i realize the people are nice and it’s a great place to live. and i didn’t mean i saw racism or racist people or white supremacy. it’s the status quo out there, regardless of how polite people on the street are, that i found pretty foreign.

the chapel hill shooting was in NC, wasn’t in 1954. that’s not to say these kinds of stories don’t happen in other states. just that it does still happen. racism may be everywhere but that doesn’t make it okay. it’s alright to point it out, which i think is the asker’s objective here

The entire US, it seems to be a country that is obsessed with race and ethnic background. Even down to level of blackness or other colours you want to choose from. It just seems to be something they all struggle with, rather than not really caring, it’s always a thing.
