In my experience marijuana is neither addictive or a gateway drug. I'd say it's an effective calming/relaxing agent, sleep aid, appetite stimulant, etc. It can reduce stress, boost mood, and help you to get deep sleep. All of those things are technically good for you. Being happy, well fed, and well rested are nice. I guess you could say it numbs the world around you in a way. You're able to put things in perspective and care less about many things. That can be a double edged sword I suppose with benefits and drawbacks.

One benefit would be that if you are not rigid in thinking, then you are more malleable and able to think outside the box. So in some ways I'd say, it has the potential to boost IQ long run, even if short run you suffer from short term memory loss. That's coming from someone that hasn't smoked weed for a long time, but has probably smoked 6-10 pounds of the stuff in my life and I easily get classified with 158 IQ and have earned multiple degrees in STEM fields. It doesn't make you dumb, unfocused, or unmotivated even though people like to stereotype people that use it that way. If you're intelligence and have good character you're not going to fail at your goals because you smoke weed. Another benefit would be exposure to altered reality. When you are able to calmly deal with altered reality regardless of if it is alcohol, marijuana, LSD or whatever I think it mentally hardens you. In life we are constantly challenged, so when you are accustomed to altered states of reality, you seem to roll with the punches more easily.

It doesn't make you crave harder drugs. If someone has a fucked up family life and is abused, then they will likely be seeking escape. Thus they wouldn't likely stop at marijuana because it's not strong enough to disassociate you from reality. Even if they never tried weed, those sort of people would seek out hard drugs that take them away from their troubles. Weed can't really do that for you. If anything it gets to to think about them deeply and to talk about them with other people. So in effect it's a sort of self administer mental therapy. If you're relatively stable, then you aren't really seeking escape from problems to begin with, therefore you're not going to go try PCP or heroin because you smoked weed. With all the weed I smoked there were many drugs I avoided. Even when prescribed opioids after surgery I didn't like them and wanted to be off of them as soon as possible.

That said, when you are relaxed, you really don't want to do a lot of stressful things. So it's not like you're going to be smoking weed and then decide to go run a marathon right after even though I personally was running 6 minute miles while smoking weed every day at one point in my life. Nor are you going to want to cram for an examine for school or try to meet a deadline at work. It's more so that you get all your stressful things out of the way and endure all the trouble sober and then you smoke to unwind, relax, bring down your mental state and sleep soundly after all the fuss is over.

As to the comments not to drive on the stuff. Yep I strongly agree with that. Marijuana significantly reduces your reaction time. I'd say it's much easier to drive on alcohol than on marijuana. Even if you are strongly aware of what is going on around you, you just can't react as fast. Everything is slower and that is really bad at fast speeds behind the wheel of heavy vehicles.

The British political philosopher and statesman Edmund Burke said, "The effect of liberty to individuals is that they may do what they please. We ought see what it will please them to do before we risk congratulations."

The core argument is that legalization is an expansion of liberty, that we already have alcohol and tobacco as intoxicants, and that marijuana is essentially harmless compared to other drugs.

The first point is likely to prove ephemeral. Even legalized, marijuana will be a controlled substance sales of which will, at a minimum, be limited to those 18 (or perhaps 21) years of age or older. To enforce this will requite an enormous regulatory, monitoring and law enforcement apparatus. Throw in that it will undoubtedly be taxed by state and local - and Federal jurisdictions - eager to cash in on the windfall, and the expansion of government bureaucracy and the court system will likely dwarf anything that the current prohibition requires.

Say what you will, the IRS, the FDA, OSHA and other such agencies do not, at the moment play a role in the law with marijuana. It is largely a matter for the courts and law enforcement. Legalize it, and whole panoply of government entities will become involved.

As to comparing it to tobacco and alcohol, do we really want another tobacco or alcohol. How much do those intoxicants cost the country in blood and treasure each year. Insert the known and unknown side effects of marijuana into the mix, it would be an ocean of misery.

One example, since Colorado legalized marijuana, emergency room admissions of children who have stumbled on mom and dad's stash have skyrocketed. Also, intoxicated driving convictions have similarly soared and employers have reported an increase in workplace accidents.

As to marijuana being harmless. This is relative. It is known that frequent users of marijuana are prone to schizophrenia - though it is disputed if marijuana is cause or effect. Minors who use marijuana show decreased IQ levels and behavior problems. These are known problems.

Throw in what we do not know and may learn later. (How long did it take before the linkage between tobacco and lung cancer was established?) Further, once these problems are discovered you can be assured that the demand for government assistance programs to aid the victims will be intense. The middle class loves it indulgences, but hates paying for them.

Add it all up, legalization is a bad idea. That said, given the Americans public's aforementioned proclivity for self-indulgence, it will likely continue to happen.

I don’t necessarily believe it’s a gateway drug BUT people who say it’s not addictive are liars. It took me a very long time to curb the habit and unless you have special circumstances ( wanting to get pregnant, drug tests at work) it’s hard to say one day ‘I wanna quit’ just because I want to.

Most users have a hard time letting it go not even because of the effects but because it helps to dull any perception of what life is. It’s sheer boredom. Of course others do it for medical reasonings but I think a person has to weigh their pros and cons before hand.

I literally decided I didn't want to smoke weed or cigarettes anymore when getting off a bus one afternoon and then I quit smoking weed without any problem after smoking weed every day for many years starting all the way back at the age 12. I never had any cravings for marijuana. I don't have any hard reasons to not to smoke it. I just made a decision within a minute or two that I was done with it. Tobacco on the other hand was a strong physical addiction to break, that was 30 days are really strong cravings, about a year of moderate cravings, and 5 years of mild cravings even though I have never smoked another cigarette after that 2 minute decision, I can say tobacco is addicting. Weed on the other hand, not at all.

They're not the same as cigarettes.

    They are equivalent to booze.

Don't take it before you drive.

Don't take it while you drive.

Don't smoke it on the streets while you walk.

marijuana is nice and helps a lot of people to function so it's a dependency and not an addiction

I completely believe it is a gateway drug. It may not be the worse drug for you but it's just an opening to try more and harder things. The thing I don't like about it is it's meant to get you high, you can drink alcohol and not feel anything if you are responsible but weed your honest goal is to get high

It is a gateway drug. Ask any county Sherriff that runs the local jail. They will tell you that most of the guys in jail are in for drug offenses. They will tell you that 90% of those guys started smoking pot with their friends.
I grew up in the 80s and I never saw it do anybody any good. Now they say it is a miracle drug. It cures anxiety, menstrual cramps, gout, amd lung cancer. I guess now that the government is making big bucks selling it it is suddenly good for you.

It's not good for schizophrenic people or those who are generically predisposed to schizophrenia. It's a nightmare if you eat too much of it. It can on rare occasions cause seizures in people with certain medical conditions. Other than that, it's great. It makes my nightmares go away and I get some sleep.

Neither helps nor hinders society and it is not a gateway drug to much of anything. It helps with sleeping problems and makes anxiety disorders much worse. It can create panic attacks in some people. It has some cardiovascular implications that are a little bit unclear at this time. I personally do not use it.

I wish it was legal where I'm from. It's safer than alcohol, and is a better pain reliever than the controlled substances that doctors push. Plus it's not addictive.

I believe it should be legal for adults. I think it can be habit forming and hinder a person's life, but that's no different than alcohol, and alcohol is more dangerous.
